Heads Up: Spoilers for the finale of The Castaways are coming up. It’s been fully revealed on Paramount Plus in 2023, and it’s being broadcasted each week on Channel 5.
If you found being involved in a plane accident harrowing, discovering yourself entangled in a twisted web of murder after the incident is far more terrifying.
But that’s exactly what poor Lori (Sheridan Smith) finds herself in the middle of in The Castaways.
Following a disagreement with her sister Erin (Celine Buckens), Lori finds herself in a harrowing situation after setting off to Fiji solo when Erin didn’t show up for the flight. As fate would have it, she ends up stranded on a deserted island alongside survivors who all harbor deadly secrets.
In The Castaways, appearances can be deceiving; Lori struggles to stay alive amidst harsh elements, while the world beyond dismisses the plane crash as a simple engine failure resulting in the deaths of all on board, as it plunged into the ocean. However, Erin’s unwavering conviction that her sister is still alive offers the slimmest glimmer of hope.
1. Was it eventually possible for Erin to locate Lori?
2. What initially led to the plane crashing?
3. How many individuals manage to escape from the beach safely?
Here’s how the final episode plays out.
Why did the plane crash in The Castaways?

Immediately following the airplane accident, officials attributed the cause to the turbulent weather conditions that led to an engine malfunction. With one exception – Erin – everyone believes the plane plunged into the ocean, resulting in all passengers perishing.
However, the reality is much more cunning, as pilot Mike Brass (Brendan Cowell), intentionally deviated the aircraft from its intended path, not out of error or mechanical failure, but as a part of a calculated scheme to please a wealthy individual aiming to silence his mistress. This woman was on the verge of disclosing their illicit affair to his wife.
The intention was to re-route the aircraft because of a suspected engine problem, causing it to touch down elsewhere. During this unexpected layover, he intended to murder his mistress, later denying any knowledge of her existence, thus ensuring his innocence when they resumed their journey.
As a film enthusiast, I must say, things took an unexpected turn during our flight. The storm that had been lurking on the horizon suddenly hit us hard, catching us off guard. This resulted in a tragic reality – our plane plummeted to the ground, leaving behind only a few survivors. Among them were Lori, pilot Mike, Daniel (Dominic Tighe), Felix (Lasarus Ratuere), Jack (Joseph Mydell), Amber (Charlotte Vega) and her baby, Sonny. Amber was severely injured in the crash, making it essential for the rest of us to band together to ensure not only her survival but also that of her child.
In due time, it’s uncovered that Amber is the ‘secondary party’ in a romantic entanglement with Daniel, and their baby is born from this affair. This means that Daniel is accountable for their difficult situation, and to add insult to injury, he’s determined to move forward with it regardless.
Mike, with an aim to preserve his life, eventually abandons the island by means of a homemade raft, adopting a fresh identity and settling inconspicuously in Fiji, without disclosing to anyone that there were any survivors.
After utilizing Lori’s credit card, Erin considers it her opportunity, and successfully locates him. He admits all his wrongdoings, such as the bribe, and threatens him with exposing this information unless he agrees to board a ship and escort her to the island.
What did Lori and Erin fight about?

As the series progresses, it’s evident that Erin carries a significant amount of remorse concerning Lori. Initially, it appears this guilt stems from missing the flight to Fiji, but as events unfold, hints suggest there’s more to it than just that. Their relationship seems to have experienced a deep conflict that they might not be able to resolve.
It’s only in the last episode that we learn about a significant argument between Lori and Erin, two individuals who had leaned on each other for years following their parents’ demise. The dispute occurred when Lori found out her husband, Pete, was involved in an affair. To make matters worse, Erin was aware of it but chose to stay silent, hoping that Pete would confess on his own accord.
As a cinephile, I’ve been holding in my feelings for far too long, but now, I can no longer contain the torrent of emotions that surges within me, especially towards Pete and Erin. The betrayal I feel is palpable, like a heavy weight on my shoulders that I can barely carry anymore.
Erin, my dear sister, I’ve been the de facto mother figure for you for years now, nurturing, guiding, and supporting you, all while yearning to have children of my own. Yet, here we are, with no children to call our own, and I can’t help but feel a deep sense of frustration and resentment towards you, Erin.
I deserve better than this, and so do I. It’s time for me to take control of my life and find the peace and happiness that I crave.
Leaving the restaurant in a rage, Erin’s exit marked their final interaction before the fateful Fiji flight. This incident, coupled with feelings of guilt, has driven Erin to seek Lori, not only as a result of remorse for missing the flight, but also in an attempt to apologize and mend their once strong sibling relationship.
How did The Castaways end?

In the closing episode, many of the surviving characters have perished. After the demise of his beloved Heather, Jack chooses to take his own life, hoping to reunite with her and conserve supplies for those determined to live. This action leaves Lori heartbroken, prompting her to assume a leadership position within our group.
Lori, smitten with survivor Felix, has been relentless in seeking the truth, but came perilously close to meeting her end when they stumbled upon something that left her feeling utterly hopeless. However, Felix managed to rescue her, and their shared experience forged a powerful romantic connection between them that seems indestructible.
Amber, who deliberately ruined their single opportunity for an exit so she could maintain her vision of a family with Daniel and Sonny, eventually vanishes. Later on, Lori uncovers the reality about Amber and Daniel’s relationship, leading her to suspect that Daniel might have been responsible for Amber’s disappearance.
1) Mike has met his end, killed by a woman who was sent by Daniel’s wife to locate him. Prior to finding him, this individual disclosed that he was responsible for Erin missing her flight – they had become acquainted the night before she was due to fly and he took her phone as a means of making sure she didn’t make it on time.
By the time the climax arrives, the tension between characters has become palpable. Erin and Lori meet up again at last, and they make a plan to escort baby Sonny to a safe location. However, Daniel refuses to part ways with his son so readily.
The two sisters deceive Daniel in a cunning manner. Lori feigns loyalty towards him while Erin pretends to be an employee of his wife, privy to his infidelity. They both conspire against him, setting up a plan to help him escape the consequences of his affair. Pretending that they need him to dispose of any incriminating evidence before boarding the boat, Daniel complies willingly, and the sisters make their escape with the baby.

However, Lori refuses to abandon Felix, so she goes back to search for him. On the beach, the sisters confront Daniel, ultimately leading to his demise. As the sisters stand off, a police boat approaches the island.
Felix, having no intention of going back to the mainland, chooses instead to continue living in this survivalist lifestyle he’s adapted to. At first, Lori separates from him, but eventually, she acknowledges her feelings and they emotionally reunite. In a poignant scene, the sisters grant each other freedom, allowing Lori to pursue her desired life for the first time.
Towards the end of the series, Erin faces interrogation about the island events, yet the police’s mishandled investigation regarding the plane crash provides them no leads. She manages to have Sonny placed in a caring household, convinces everyone that Lori is deceased, and passes the money from the plane crash to Mike’s distant daughter.
In the closing scenes, it seems that every character finds their desired outcome: Lori is pictured beaming on the shoreline, enjoying fishing and expecting the child she’s longed for, as Felix constructs a fire not far off from her.
