Stranger Things Animated Series: First Details Revealed!

The creators of “Stranger Things” have started work on an upcoming animated series titled “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85“, which will air on Netflix, in addition to their ongoing work on the fifth and final season of the live-action show. Despite the franchise’s upcoming conclusion, its immense popularity ensures that there will be more “Stranger Things” content in the future. Alongside other potential projects, this animated series is a unique addition to the Stranger Things universe.

At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this year, Netflix presented one of their many upcoming projects: Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. This release offered a glimpse into what’s to come, and according to Variety, it has shared some initial story details for fans to anticipate. However, it remains undetermined if (and how) this new animated series will connect with the main storyline or introduce fresh characters.

What’s New for Stranger Things’ Animated Series?

As announced at Annecy, Eric Robles from Flying Bark Productions (who is also involved with Netflix’s upcoming Ghostbusters animated series) has been appointed showrunner for Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. The creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, will serve as executive producers through their Upside Down Pictures banner. Additionally, Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen from 21 Laps and Hilary Leavitt from Upside Down Pictures will oversee the new series as executive producers. The initial story synopsis has also been unveiled.

Tales From ’85” is set in Hawkins during the winter of 1985 and features the original characters from the show battling new monsters and solving a mysterious supernatural occurrence in their town. However, it’s unclear whether “the original characters” refers to new characters for this series or characters from the original Stranger Things series appearing in these animated adventures. This also leaves room for debate about which cast members might return.

What Does This Mean for Stranger Things?

Matt and Ross Duffer, creators of “Stranger Things”, once expressed their long-held dream of animating the series in a style reminiscent of our beloved Saturday morning cartoons from childhood. They shared that witnessing this vision come to life has been nothing short of exhilarating. In collaboration with Eric Robles and his team, they’ve been left speechless by the quality of the scripts and artwork, and they can’t wait to reveal more details to us! The adventure is just getting started…

As I write this, there’s no announced release window or date for “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85”, but I’m excited that the main series of Stranger Things is gearing up for its final chapter later in the year. It’s been confirmed that Season 5 of Stranger Things will be split into three parts, with the first four episodes of the finale set to premiere on November 26th. Three more episodes will follow on Christmas, and the grand finale is scheduled for New Year’s Eve.
