Stranger Things Reveals Time Jump Between Seasons 4 and 5 (And Its Length)

As a devoted fan who grew up in the 80s, the anticipation for the next season of Stranger Things is like waiting for the Eggo waffle truck to roll into town – it’s an exciting, nerve-wracking, and nostalgia-inducing experience all rolled into one. The time skip to 1987 in Season 5 has me reminiscing about my own high school days (okay, okay, I may have graduated a tad later than the characters) and I can’t help but wonder how the dynamics of our beloved Hawkins crew will change with this significant leap forward.

Netflix’s sneak peek for ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 emphasizes a significant change: the time jump. The action unfolds in autumn 1987, which is roughly a year and a half since the events of Season 4’s conclusion. It’s possible that quite a bit has shifted in Hawkins, Indiana over this period.

The fourth season of “Stranger Things” was set in March 1986, making a leap at least to September 1987 the most significant time jump the show has had so far (though not by a large margin). This could explain the delay between seasons and how much the cast has grown up during this period. However, there are likely storyline reasons behind this gap that will be explained when the final season debuts. As for the fifth season, the teaser suggests it will air in 2025, but a specific release date hasn’t been confirmed yet.

The debut of Stranger Things Season 1 took place on November 6, 1983, making that date “Stranger Things Day” according to Netflix. Season 2 continued in autumn 1984, and while Season 3 moved ahead to summer 1985, it’s worth noting that Season 4 only advanced to March 1986 – a relatively short timeframe. Interestingly, when Season 5 resumes in the autumn of 1987, it will be the first season to pass more than 12 months since its previous season.

On Wednesday, we didn’t get any fresh footage or dialogue about the upcoming season in the teaser. Instead, it hinted at the puzzles and themes we can expect to encounter in the new season. Some of these elements are drawn from Dungeons & Dragons, like “Sorcerer,” while others, such as “the Rightside Up,” seem to be self-referential. The teaser suggests that this final adventure starts in autumn 1987.

Initially, the series Stranger Things was intended to span four seasons. However, creators hinted at a potential fifth season as early as 2017. Yet, some viewers speculated if the young cast would still fit the narrative by the show’s conclusion, considering the delays and complications that arose along the way. For instance, the production of Season 4 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and further delays occurred when the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike affected the scriptwriting for Season 5. To make matters more challenging, key actors like David Harbour had commitments to other projects, such as his role in the MCU, and Winona Ryder was involved with the film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Reports indicate that filming for “Stranger Things” Season 5 is nearly wrapped up, as confirmed by Finn Wolfhard in an update he shared with PEOPLE recently. He stated, “Things are going wonderfully, and it’s been incredibly special. It’s been very emotional, really. Working alongside everyone knowing it’s the last season has been fantastic, but it’s also quite surreal.

The fifth season of the popular series “Stranger Things” is set to premiere next year, though a specific release date has not been announced as of now. In the meantime, you can catch up on the previous seasons which are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
