Stranger Things: The First Shadow Play Gets Premiere Date on Broadway

As a die-hard Stranger Things fan who’s been through the Upside Down more times than I can count, this news about The First Shadow play coming to Broadway next spring has my heart racing faster than Dustin on a bike! After binge-watching the series multiple times and spending countless hours discussing theories with fellow fans, it’s time to take my obsession to the next level.

Fans have been waiting for two years to catch up with the story of “Stranger Things” in Hawkins, Indiana, but fans in the UK got a sneak peek through the play “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” which is set before the Netflix series. It was recently announced that this play will debut on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre next spring. Since filming for the final season of the show is ongoing, there’s a chance that “The First Shadow” could open on Broadway even before the series finale. Previews for “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” begin on March 28, 2025, with an official opening set for April 22, 2025.

In the year 1959, Hawkins was an ordinary town with common concerns. Young Jim Hopper had troubles starting his car, Bob Newby’s sister disregarded his radio show, and Joyce Maldonado yearned to graduate and escape the town. The arrival of new student Henry Creel didn’t make a fresh start that easy, as it seemed the long shadows of the past still lingered on. You can watch a trailer from the UK production below for more details.

“Stranger Things: The First Shadow” is helmed by directors Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin, who’ve developed this narrative from an initial concept by the show’s creators Matt and Ross Duffer. At present, casting calls have not gone out for the Broadway adaptation.

The Netflix series “Stranger Things” premiered in 2016 and has since taken the pop culture scene by storm, leading to various games, comics, and other media delving deeper into the Upside Down universe. Now, this stage play represents a significant expansion of the franchise, with more spinoffs hinted at but not yet officially announced. Previously, the Duffer brothers suggested that “The First Shadow” was merely the beginning.

“Matt and Ross Duffer expressed excitement in a statement when the play was announced, saying, ‘Exploring our universe beyond the TV show is an exhilarating journey, and working alongside this outstanding team, under the guidance of the inspiring Stephen Daldry, is a rewarding exploration.’ They added that ‘Bringing this fresh Stranger Things tale to the stage, with live spectators, is an exciting venture,’ and they’re thrilled that London, a city known for its vibrant theater scene, will be hosting the world premiere of their new story. They can hardly wait to unveil it to you.”

The premiere event for “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” will take place on Friday, March 28, 2025, with a full launch scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Keep an eye out for announcements regarding the final season of “Stranger Things.”
