As a child of the ’90s, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia whenever I come across news about the return of some of my favorite childhood toys and cartoons. Street Sharks is one such blast from the past that has me reminiscing about Saturday morning cartoon marathons and hours spent playing with action figures in my bedroom.

As a big fan of the ’90s revival, I’m thrilled that Street Sharks figurines from Mattel are making a comeback! The initial release of 6-inch scale figures hit stores in March, marking the 30th anniversary of the 1994 animated series. These collectibles flew off the shelves but don’t worry, they’re back in stock now. To add to the excitement, three new exclusive figures – Streex, Big Slammu, and Dr. Piranoid – will be available during Walmart’s San Diego Comic-Con 2024/Collector Con event. So, get ready to expand your collection with these highly anticipated additions!

As someone who grew up collecting action figures, I can’t help but get excited about the latest addition to my collection: the new Street Sharks! Having collected various figurines throughout my childhood, I’ve come to appreciate the thought and care put into creating modern toys with advanced features.

  • Street Sharks Streex – See at Walmart: “This crime-fighting super-hero has ‘real feel’ skin, modern articulation, chomping jaws, combat claws, fin-line skates and a modular shark cage.”
  • Street Sharks Big Slammu – See at Walmart: Includes a signature super-slam fist action.
  • Street Sharks Dr. Piranoid – See at Walmart: “This figure of the gene-juggling madman has modern articulation, a spring-fired speargun with projectiles, transformation action, and a modular shark cage.”

In the initial rollout, Mattel introduced collectible 6-inch figures of Ripster, Jab, and Slash as part of the Street Sharks wave. These figures are now available for purchase and can be ordered on Amazon and Walmart’s websites. Keep in mind that other nostalgic Mattel toys, such as Mighty Max, could potentially follow the Street Sharks line.

PJ Lewis, Mattel’s VP of Global Marketing and head of Action Figures, shared some insights with ComicBook about Mattel Creations, the fan-focused content platform. At Comic-Con in San Diego, they gathered fan suggestions for toys that should be brought back – with Street Sharks and Mighty Max being the top choices.

“In my opinion, Mattel has excelled in handling the nostalgia side of collecting. I strongly believe that brands like ‘Street Sharks’ and ‘Mighty Max’ suit them perfectly. Mattel boasts a vast intellectual property collection in pop culture. I’m convinced that these retro-nostalgic brands hold potential for reinvention. At the same time, they offer fans who grew up with them a chance to revisit cherished memories and storylines, and now own a piece of their past as adults.”

As a dedicated gamer, I understand the importance of bringing beloved characters to life authentically. Let me put it this way: we’re committed to delivering each character with an accurate touch. It’s not just about giving them a fresh look, although that could be part of it. Perhaps we enhance their articulation for smoother gameplay or improve their decos (paint jobs) for a more vibrant appearance.

What Was Street Sharks About?

In the animated series “Street Sharks,” scientists Dr. Robert Bolton and Dr. Luther Paradigm develop a device called the “gene-slammer.” This machine alters the DNA of aquatic animals, turning them into humanoid hybrids. Bolton tries to stop Paradigm from misusing it for personal gain, but during their struggle, Bolton is transformed into an unknown creature and manages to escape. Later, Paradigm imbues Bolton’s sons – John, Bobby, Coop, and Clint – with the likenesses of sharks. When their friend Bends gets captured by Paradigm, the Street Sharks come to his rescue, leading to a battle that results in Paradigm being infused with piranha DNA, earning him the nickname “Dr. Piranoid” among other characters. Throughout the show, Dr. Paradigm creates numerous mutant animals to attack the Street Sharks as they try to protect their city, Fission City, from imprisonment. A few of these creatures join the Street Sharks’ side: Rox, Moby Lick, Mantaman, and El Swordo.
