Strictly to celebrate Amy Dowden’s return as she dedicates special routine to those facing cancer

As a long-time fan of Strictly Come Dancing, it is with immense joy that I eagerly anticipate the return of this beloved show for its 20th anniversary season. Among the many reasons to be excited, the heartwarming comeback of Amy Dowden after her courageous battle against breast cancer truly stands out.

As the beginning of this year’s 20th anniversary season of Strictly Come Dancing gets closer, it’s been made known that there will be a unique group dance featured in the opening episode, commemorating the comeback of Amy Dowden.

Last year, Dowden took a break from playing due to her breast cancer treatment, but this season, she’s scheduled to return to the professional roster.

The featured dance style is a lively Quickstep, where you’ll spot Amy brightly adorned in pink, joined by other skilled dancers. It’s been made official that Amy’s spouse and relatives were present in the audience at Elstree Studios, observing as the performance unfolded on camera.

The dance routine was skillfully arranged by Jason Gilkison, featuring a mix of songs such as “Training Season” by Dua Lipa, “Busy Earnin'” and “Keep Moving” by Jungle, along with “Candle Flame” performed jointly by Jungle and Eric the Architect. The band led by Dave Arch was responsible for performing this medley.

Dowden expressed his enthusiasm about the unique dance: “I’m thrilled to be reunited with my Strictly family! I’m incredibly thankful for this chance, particularly since it’s an exceptional year for this iconic series.”

“I’m experiencing a nostalgic thrill reminiscent of my freshman year! The anticipation is electrifying as I eagerly look forward to reuniting with the whole squad, marveling at the creative costumes, rehearsing our dance routines, and meeting the star-studded lineup of celebrities and judges. This excitement is palpable!”

“I’m always grinning, it seems, and that’s why everyone’s chuckling. This dance is dedicated to my dear pink sisters who have stood by me throughout the last year, as well as everyone bravely battling cancer right now.”

While speaking about it, Jason Gilkison, the creative director for Strictly Come Dancing and the creator of the dance number, expressed his delight: “Choreographing this unique, powerful, and empowering routine to celebrate Amy‘s comeback was an absolute joy.”

Working with her, along with our professional dancers, is nothing short of delightful. They’re undoubtedly masters of their art, and it’s a privilege to showcase their talents to the country. This special occasion, in particular, benefits from their exceptional celebratory dance.

As a cinema devotee, I’m excited to share that this year’s Strictly Come Dancing celebrities will feature Chris McCausland, JB Gill, Wynne Evans, Toyah Willcox, Punam Krishan, Tasha Ghouri, Pete Wicks, and Shayne Ward. It’s going to be a fantastic season!

Additionally participating are Sarah Hadland, Montell Douglas, Tom Dean, Jamie Borthwick, Nick Knowles, Sam Quek, and Paul Merson.

Strictly Come Dancing will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this autumn.
