Strictly’s Kym Marsh speaks out on experience with axed pro Graziano Di Prima

As a seasoned critic with decades of experience in the world of dance and entertainment, I find myself at a crossroads when it comes to Strictly Come Dancing this year. The recent developments involving Graziano Di Prima‘s departure from the show have cast a dark shadow over an otherwise vibrant and entertaining spectacle.

After it was revealed by the BBC that Graziano Di Prima physically kicked Zara McDermott during rehearsals for Strictly Come Dancing in 2021, leading to his dismissal, his dance partner for the 2022 season, Kym Marsh, has shared her experiences working with him.

When conversing with The Sun, Marsh expressed hesitation about discussing another person’s journey extensively. However, she shared that performing on that particular show was undeniably one of the most remarkable experiences in her life, making it truly exceptional.

In response, I’d say: “I haven’t encountered anything similar to what we’ve been discussing. What I’ve experienced is vastly different, absolutely different.”

Marsh expressed that she’ll forever cherish heartwarming recollections from her time on the program, and admitted being taken aback by the accusations involving Di Prima.

After Di Prima left the Strictly Professionals group in July, McDermott shared his thoughts on the show, expressing that: “My Strictly journey was more wonderful than I could have ever imagined. The whole production team, those working behind the scenes, my fellow competitors – they were all fantastic to collaborate with.”

“Contrarily to what one might expect based on outside accounts, my time within the training room was markedly distinct. I’ve been subjected to certain experiences during the show that have led to reports and, unfortunately, there were spectators who bore witness to specific occurrences. Moreover, there are harrowing footage of particular incidents that are deeply troubling to view.”

As a movie critic, I’ve always been apprehensive about baring my soul – fearing the repercussions of public scrutiny, fretting over the uncertain future, and dreading potential victim blaming. However, after numerous heartfelt discussions with those closest to me, I found the courage to confront these fears. When approached by the BBC for a candid interview about my experience on the show, I decided to open up and share my truth.

I’m grateful for the quick response and exceptional support from both the BBC and BBC Studios. I also appreciate all those who have taken the time to reach out to me; their kindness truly touches my heart.

In a recent interview with The Mail, Di Prima clarified that everything that was stated during the initial 20-day period is entirely false.

He stated, “I believed we were companions. Indeed, we were friends. Rest assured, I’m not some heartless beast. I’m not a man of cruelty. I refuse to allow these falsehoods to shape my identity. They do not reflect my true character.”

Di Prima went on to say: “These malicious, unfounded accusations destroyed my life in a flash – in terms of career, finances, emotional wellbeing, and reputation. I can be stern, I can be fervent. I desire my companion to reach their maximum potential. That’s what Zara also wanted.”

After Di Prima’s dismissal from the show in July, BBC director-general Tim Davie stated: “There will be a certain level of ambition and desire to excel, but there are boundaries, and these should never be overstepped. We do not tolerate any form of unacceptable conduct whatsoever.”

Strictly Come Dancing will to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this autumn.
