Struggling to play Xbox games via Cloud Gaming during your holiday break? You’re not alone, but a fix is in the works.

As a seasoned researcher who has witnessed countless tech mishaps and triumphs alike, I find myself once again in the midst of a digital conundrum: Xbox Cloud Gaming outages during the holiday season. This isn’t exactly uncharted territory, but it’s disheartening to see such an innovative service grappling with issues when people are eagerly diving into their newly acquired gaming devices.

In certain regions, there have been interruptions with Xbox Cloud Gaming and related online services. However, technical assistance is actively working to resolve these problems at this time.

On December 26th, an issue with Xbox Cloud Games was first announced through official communication channels from Xbox. Gamers have experienced problems either failing to launch these games or unexpected disconnections while playing. The Xbox Status page initially indicated that a solution for this problem was imminent, but it took longer than expected to implement the fix. As I write this, users are still experiencing troubles with both Xbox Cloud Gaming and Remote Play services.

According to updates from the official Xbox Support on their social media platforms, certain gamers have been experiencing longer-than-usual wait times for cloud games. However, it was indicated by the support staff that these games are actually designed to load more swiftly than the displayed waiting period suggests.

Users might experience what appears to be an excessive wait time when trying to start a cloud-based game. However, our teams anticipate that users will actually connect more quickly than the length of time indicated. [Tweet Link: https://t.co/vdGXVBNZ2t] December 27, 2024

During this outage, not every area utilizing Xbox Cloud Gaming and Remote Play services experienced partial functionality. Xbox hasn’t pinpointed specifically which areas are experiencing issues. While Windows Central’s Jez Corden reports the service is functioning in his region, some users on social media have mentioned extended wait times to access Fortnite through Cloud Gaming – as high as 175 minutes in one case. Other users reported wait times ranging from 220 to 255 minutes. For some, these long wait times were only resolved by a frustrating disconnect, forcing them to reattempt launching the service and face more extended wait times.

Despite Xbox not explaining the cause of the service disruption, a multitude of users are facing long wait times, accompanied by a message saying “Many people are playing!” This suggests that the servers for Xbox Cloud Gaming might be overwhelmed due to the increased demand during the holiday season. Interestingly, Microsoft launched its “This is an Xbox” campaign emphasizing cloud gaming on various devices ahead of the holiday shopping spree. As more users sign up for Xbox Cloud Gaming through Game Pass on newly-purchased devices, it places additional stress on the servers housed in data centers that are powering the service.

This story is still developing…
