A tragedy has occurred off the coast of Egypt.
On March 27th, at least six individuals lost their lives when a Sinbad Submarines submersible collided in the Red Sea, approximately a mile away from the coast of Hurghada, as confirmed by the Egyptian governorate office to NBC News.
According to Reuters, it was confirmed that every victim in the crash was a citizen from another country, and Russia’s embassy in Cairo informed NBC News that among the deceased were four Russian nationals.
Forty-five tourists total—including minors—were aboard the submarine, per the statement.
The majority of individuals aboard were successfully saved and transported to their respective hotels and medical facilities in Hurghada,” the statement continued, emphasizing that their overall well-being was not an issue. Nonetheless, city authorities informed the Associated Press that a minimum of nine individuals sustained injuries.
Details about the cause of the crash are still unknown, but it happened around 10 in the morning local time. Sinbad Submarines, a well-known tourism company situated in Egypt, provides underwater tours at a depth of 25 meters for $70 per individual, as stated on their website. 1. The specifics of the crash incident are still under investigation, but it took place around 10 a.m. locally. Sinbad Submarines, a prominent tourism agency in Egypt, offers underwater tours at a depth of 25 meters for $70 per visitor, as per their website. They possess two out of only fourteen recreational submersibles worldwide and provide a diving experience after the trip, as mentioned on their site.
The accident occurred mere months following a tourist yacht capsizing in November, approximately in the same region of the Red Sea. The mishap was caused by turbulent waters, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals. Remarkably, 33 others were successfully rescued. Among those aboard were local Egyptian residents and foreign visitors hailing from countries such as the United States, Germany, Poland, Ireland, China, Slovakia, and more, according to reports by the Associated Press.
At that moment, the vessel, called the Sea Story, encountered no identified mechanical issues and secured all necessary permissions. Yet, survivors recounted in statements that a massive wave led to the ship overturning, causing the situation to rapidly deteriorate “within minutes.
In the year 2023, OceanGate, a firm known for operating submarines in tourism and research activities, suffered a tragic collapse during an exploration to the wreckage site of the Titanic. The submersible, titled “The Titan,” which was 22 feet long, held five individuals including OceanGate’s founder, Stockton Rush, prior to its fatal collapse.
After the accident, the closed corporation described the men as “bold pioneers embodying an exceptional zest for adventure and an unwavering dedication to discovering and preserving Earth’s underwater wonders.

On June 18, 2023, the underwater explorer Titan, operated by OceanGate Expeditions based in the U.S., and carrying a crew of five on an expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic, went missing. After a five-day search, the US Coast Guard confirmed at a press conference held on June 22 that the vessel had experienced a “massive collapse” which resulted in the tragic loss of all five passengers aboard.
The British-based entrepreneur Shahzada Dawood, who was born in Pakistan, and his 19-year-old son Suleman Dawood, both holding British citizenship, were unfortunately counted among the casualties as well.
I’m absolutely smitten by this family, renowned for their staggering wealth in Pakistan. I’m talking about none other than the family with Shahzada Dawood as the vice chairman of Engro Corporation, a fact that’s been confirmed by The New York Times. And here’s the fascinating part: his son was engrossed in his studies at the University of Strathclyde, right smack in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland.
Azmeh Dawood, Shahzada’s sister, shared with NBC News that Suleman initially showed hesitance towards embarking on the journey. He confided in a family member that he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic and felt quite frightened about the expedition to investigate the Titanic wreckage. However, in the end, he decided to go as a tribute to his father, who is an avid Titanic enthusiast, for Father’s Day.
With deep sadness, we share the news on our website that Shahzada and Suleman Dawood have tragically passed away. They were sadly lost while onboard the OceanGate’s Titan submersible which sank underwater. We kindly ask for your prayers during this challenging time of grief for their souls and our family.
Stockton Rush, the founder of OceanGate, was at the helm of their exploratory vessel known as the Titan. With roots in Everett, Washington dating back to 2009 when he established his research company, Rush has always been captivated by exploration. At 61 years old, this seasoned entrepreneur once expressed a desire to be the first person on Mars and strived to leave behind the legacy of an innovator.
Besides captaining expeditions to view the remains of the Titanic, Rush had an unexpected link to the historic 1912 incident: His wife, Wendy Rush, is a descendant, three greats removed, of the couple who perished on the Titanic – Ida and Isidor Straus.
On June 17th, via an Instagram post, the British billionaire Hamish Harding explicitly acknowledged his involvement in the project, a day prior to the submersible’s descent into the water, which subsequently vanished.
He’s thrilled to reveal that he’s now part of OceanGate Expedition’s RMS Titanic Mission, serving as a mission specialist aboard the submersible diving to the Titanic. Due to Newfoundland experiencing its worst winter in 40 years, this could be the sole manned mission to the Titanic in 2023. A weather opportunity has presented itself, and we’re planning to make a dive attempt tomorrow.
According to Harding, the head of Action Aviation, they set sail from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, and are scheduled to initiate diving operations around 4 a.m. on June 18. The 58-year-old further mentioned that there is much work to be done in terms of preparations and briefings before then.
In previous expeditions, he ventured into the most profound depths of the Mariana Trench. He shared with Gulf News in 2021 that this journey was exceptionally challenging: “The conditions were incredibly inhospitable. To reach areas within the Challenger Deep where no human had ever set foot before was a truly remarkable experience.
The Dubai entrepreneur also embarked on a journey around the globe via airplane through the One More Orbit initiative, and recently ventured into space aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin New Shepard rocket last year. Harding frequently expresses his passion for exploration with his son, who is often referred to as a “teenage explorer” on his Instagram account.
Regarding the fifth individual, Paul-Henri Nargeolet’s representative confirmed to the New York Times that he was aboard the Titanic. Additionally, Harding mentioned him on Instagram as part of the same team.
The Times portrayed him as a seasoned maritime professional who had previously served in the French Navy. At 71 years old, he was an acknowledged expert on the Titanic and had visited the wreckage no less than 35 times prior to this. Nargeolet held the position of director at RMS Titanic, Inc., a company dedicated to researching, recovering, and exhibiting artifacts from the iconic ship, as reported by the source.
Alongside fellow passenger Hamish Harding, he was a member of The Explorers Club, founded in 1904.
According to Harding’s post, the submersible known as Titan was included in an OceanGate Expeditions journey, which delves into the remnants of the RMS Titanic – a ship that tragically sunk in 1912 and has since become notorious.
OceanGate extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, acknowledging them as brave explorers who embodied a unique zest for adventure and a profound love for discovering and safeguarding the world’s oceans. During this difficult period, our thoughts are with these five individuals and their families. We mourn the loss of life and the cheer they brought to everyone fortunate enough to know them.
