Succession Creator’s New Film Puts Four Billionaires at Odds While the World Crumbles in First Trailer

Building upon the triumph of our collective endeavor, I’ve been privileged to carry on my creative partnership with HBO. Instead of focusing on television series now, I’ve moved towards crafting an original film for HBO entitled “Mountainhead”.

The project has been officially greenlit, with an Emmy-winning filmmaker slated to pen the script and co-produce alongside Frank Rich. Further updates emerged in early April when it was announced that the movie would be coming to Max on May 31. As the release date approaches, Mountainhead has released its initial teaser trailer.

Initially, it was mentioned that “Mountainhead” revolves around a gathering of wealthy acquaintances amidst a global turmoil. However, the latest sneak peek implies that these four billionaire friends could potentially trigger or exacerbate the international financial crisis themselves.

At a secluded location called Mountainhead, characters Randall (Steve Carell), Hugo Van Yalk, also known as Souper (Jason Schwartzman), Venis (Cory Michael Smith), and Jeff (Ramy Youssef) gather for a retreat. As they socialize, news broadcasts speak of “stockpiling goods and unrest,” which eventually creates tension among the friends as global conflicts intensify.

In the preview, Jeff alleges that Venis’ system, which appears reminiscent of Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, propagates unverifiable deepfakes, fraudulent activities on a large scale, and market volatility. Earlier, he had labeled their platform as both racist and poor in quality while their companions attempt to inject humor into the situation after Jeff’s accusations.

This upcoming movie is Armstrong’s first project since “Succession” concluded its Emmy-winning streak in 2023, marking his feature film debut. The cast includes Hadley Robinson as Hester, Andy Daly as Casper, Ali Kinkade as Berry, Daniel Oreskes as Dr. Phipps, David Thompson as Leo, Amie MacKenzie as Janine, and Ava Kostia as Paula. Filming for the movie occurred in March 2025, lasting a month in Park City, Utah before wrapping up.
