As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the monumental letdown that was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League last year. It seems Warner Bros. Interactive is still grappling with the aftermath of its disappointing sales performance, as we’re only now becoming aware of the profound impact this commercial failure had.
This past week, I was disheartened to learn that Warner Bros. had essentially smashed their gaming division with a sledgehammer. The company closed numerous studios and scrapped several projects, but the most talked-about casualty was the highly anticipated PS5 Wonder Woman game, along with its developer Monolith, known for creating Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
It’s worth noting that, due to financial losses from projects such as Suicide Squad and MultiVersus (which will be shutting down in May), Warner Bros. might not have had to make such widespread cuts and cancellations over the past year if they hadn’t been losing money.
Even though Wonder Woman faced a challenging production process, she could be seen as one of the casualties, albeit partially, resulting from Warner Bros.’ previous missteps.
In his recent Kinda Funny podcast discussion (as reported by GamesRadar), Jason Schreier pointed out that due to poor performance, a total of $300 million was written off last year for both Suicide Squad and subsequent releases like MultiVersus and Quidditch Champions. These projects failed to meet expectations.
To put it simply, I can’t help but notice that when a company like Warner Bros., with its massive size, faces such significant losses, it’s only natural for them to brainstorm strategies to mitigate the financial impact.
Naturally, it’s difficult for us, being external observers, not to perceive this whole situation as a series of missteps or poor management decisions made by the publishing company.
How do you feel about everything that’s happening? Were you excited for Wonder Woman? Did you anticipate cancellations like these following Suicide Squad’s failure? Express your thoughts by nodding your head in the comments area below.
