Suni Lee Details Having Mental Breakdown Before Olympic Team Finals

As I gaze upon these heartwarming images of athletes from around the world, it brings me back to my own days competing. The raw emotion, the unbridled joy, the shared moments of triumph and defeat – they are feelings that transcend language, culture, and time.

Prior to Suni Lee contributing significantly to the U.S. gymnastics team’s triumph at the 2024 Olympics, she found herself in a state of great worry.

21-year-old athlete experienced a mental collapse the eve of her participation alongside Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles in the women’s gymnastics team final all-around on July 30. They along with their teammate Hezly Rivera eventually won gold in this event.

For Lee, it was her teammates who eventually encouraged her. Chiles called Biles over to offer words of encouragement to the other returning champion.

In a chat with Glamour, published October 3, I remember Biles saying something that really resonated with me: “Act like you’re the undisputed Olympic champion, and carry it with confidence.” She also added, “‘Remember, you’re good enough, and you’ve earned your spot on this team for a reason.'” In my own words, this translates to: I should strut around as if I’m the reigning Olympic champ, and I need to embrace that role. I must remind myself that I am talented enough, and I made it onto this team for a specific purpose.

In the run-up to the 2024 Olympics, Lee, who is known for shedding tears before competitions, embarked on her journey three years following her initial Olympic victory—the gold medal win in the women’s all-around gymnastics final at the Tokyo Olympics held in 2021.

According to Glamour, she felt she wasn’t worthy of receiving that honor, which followed Biles withdrawing from the event – an action that was frequently discussed on social media by many viewers.

At the 2024 Olympics, Lee bagged bronze medals in both the women’s all-around gymnastics final (where Biles clinched gold) and the uneven bars event. However, she experienced a fall during her final competition on the balance beam, placing sixth.

In a perfect world, I would have wrapped up my Olympic journey in Paris differently, and I must admit, I felt a pang of disappointment. However, as the day drew to a close, I couldn’t help but swell with pride. After all, I had achieved something extraordinary – I made it to the Olympics! Honestly, I never dared to dream that this day would come for me.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but be awestruck by Lee’s resilience. Her triumphant return to the mat at the Olympics was nothing short of miraculous after battling through some incredibly tough health hurdles. In 2023, she was hit with a double whammy – two kidney diseases that made her retain excessive water and added over 40 pounds to her weight. This setback forced her to take a six-month hiatus from training. But the indomitable spirit that defines Lee wouldn’t let her down. She dusted herself off, stepped back into the gym in January of this year, and fought tooth and nail for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Her story is a testament to the human will to overcome adversity and a beacon of inspiration for fans like me.

She mentioned that not many people know this, but a week prior to the Olympic trials, she needed an infusion due to a relapse in her health condition.

Now, after her 2024 Olympic journey, Lee is in a better place in her life.

As an overjoyed admirer, I can’t help but express that this experience has transcended more than just the physical realm for me. Mentally, it’s a place where I’ve found solace in accepting every single moment that unfolded here. Few get the privilege to return twice and challenge the crème de la crème, and I feel incredibly blessed to be among them. The sheer joy of this competition has left me absolutely ecstatic. And what makes it even more gratifying is my newfound ability to truly savor every bit of this journey, which I believe is why I’m so content with each and every one of my medals.

Eventually, Lee made her comeback to the Olympic mat following a challenging stretch with health issues. In the year 2023, she was diagnosed with two kidney disorders that led to water retention and caused her to gain over 40 pounds. This necessitated a six-month break from training before she resumed working out in January of this year with the aim of qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team.

She mentioned that not many people are aware, but a week prior to the Olympic trials, she had to receive an infusion as she experienced a relapse.

Now, after her 2024 Olympic journey, Lee is in a better place in her life.

The six-time Olympic medalist expressed that it’s not only his physical experience but also the mental journey that has allowed him to accept all that transpired. He added, “Few get a chance to return here twice and compete alongside the elite athletes. I felt simply fantastic, and now I’ve mastered the art of fully appreciating each moment. I believe this is why I am so content with every single one of my medals.
