As someone who grew up watching Christopher Reeve soar through the skies as Superman, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and admiration upon seeing the trailer for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. Having followed his career since the 1970s, it’s fascinating to see how he transformed from an ordinary actor to an extraordinary icon, not just on screen but in real life.
In a nod to Lois Lane, let me rephrase: “Super Man” – the title of the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story – delves into the life and career of the man who brought Superman to life in the 1978 film Superman: The Movie and its subsequent sequels. Christopher Reeve, an actor and activist, was left paralyzed from the neck down after a horse-riding accident in 1995. This feature-length documentary received praise at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and will be screened exclusively in theaters on September 21st and again on Reeve’s birthday, September 25th. A worldwide release is planned for later in the year.
In the recently unveiled trailer, the children of Reeve – ABC News correspondent Will Reeve, Matthew Reeve, and Alexandra Reeve Givens, who are all part of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation’s Board – share thoughts on their father’s enduring legacy and his life post-accident.
The documentary is helmed by filmmakers Ian Bonhôtte and Peter Ettedgui (known for their BAFTA Award-nominated work on “McQueen”) and features exclusive, previously unseen home videos and a wealth of personal archival materials, along with the first in-depth interviews conducted with Christopher Reeve’s three children about their father. Additionally, it includes conversations with A-list Hollywood stars who worked with or were friends with Reeve, such as Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, and Jeff Daniels.
2024 marks the 20-year anniversary of our father’s passing, which seemed like the perfect moment to share his remarkable tale with the world again. As we crossed paths with Passion Pictures, Misfits Entertainment, and the team at Words + Pictures, along with Ian and Peter, it became clear that we had found the ideal collaborators. The pieces fell into place in a way that made us confident enough to be open, honest, and vulnerable with them. Trusting them, we were overjoyed by their response, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience this incredible story too.
Reeve Givens noted, “The film showcases various aspects of his personality and interests. His commitment to his profession was evident before the incident, but it truly shone after his comeback to acting and directing, proving that a disability need not be an impediment. This demonstration of perseverance despite immense challenges is a significant aspect of his legacy. Yet, another crucial element is his activism. He was a campaigner even before the injury, and afterward, he gained global recognition for his advocacy work in medical research and disability rights.”
The film titled “Super/Man” is acclaimed as a heartfelt and dynamic cinematic rendition of Reeve’s extraordinary tale. This production originates from Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, HBO Documentary Films, CNN Films, Words + Pictures, Passion Pictures, Misfits Entertainment, and Fathom Events.
“The life of Christopher Reeve, an unsung actor who rose to fame as the iconic Superman, serves as an inspiring tale. His portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the standard for modern superhero films. He played Superman in four ‘Superman’ movies and showcased his versatile acting skills in numerous other roles before suffering a near-fatal horse riding accident in 1995, which left him paralyzed from the neck down.
