As a movie critic who has been fortunate enough to have witnessed the golden era of Hollywood, I must say that the upcoming documentary, “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” is more than just another biopic. It’s a testament to human resilience, an ode to an icon, and a reminder that even the most powerful superheroes have their own real-life battles to fight.
In many people’s eyes, Christopher Reeve was synonymous with Superman and arguably delivered the most compelling portrayal of both the superhero and the ordinary man Clark Kent on film. He played this role in four movies, but unfortunately his career was abruptly ended following a horse riding accident in 1995, which left him paralyzed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair until his passing in 2004. The upcoming documentary “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” offers a glimpse into his life, as seen in its trailer.
In spite of being left quadriplegic, the doctor shared that Reeve found the courage to put aside earlier reservations about living and instead, propelled by the support of his loved ones, dedicated his life to researching a cure for spinal cord injuries and championing disability rights and care.
The movie features exclusive home videos and a wealth of personal archive content, along with the first in-depth interviews conducted with Christopher Reeve’s three kids discussing their father, as well as interviews with prominent Hollywood stars like Robin Williams who was his lifelong friend. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, the same team behind “McQueen”, this film delves into Reeve’s Hollywood background and personal life, including home videos and interviews with his three children and Hollywood associates and acquaintances.
It’s quite ironic – in a heart-wrenching yet fitting way – that an individual who portrayed Superman on screen ended up as a quadriplegic. However, a documentary that appears deeply moving seems to highlight that this actor embodied the essence of a superhero even more than the fictional character he played. He dedicated his life to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries and championing disability rights and care.
The film is released in the US on21st Sept with international release dates to be confirmed.
