As a seasoned video game enthusiast and movie buff who grew up with a Gameboy in one hand and a remote control in the other, I must say that the prospect of Spike returning for the sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is a bit murky.
As the next installment of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” hits cinemas, it’s likely that both familiar and fresh faces will appear on screen. Although Nintendo and Universal haven’t revealed many details about the film’s characters, some are more probable than others. Characters like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Bowser are expected to return, but the fate of lesser-known characters such as Spike is uncertain. Sebastian Maniscalco, who voiced Spike in the first movie, has expressed uncertainty about his role in the sequel. While talking to ScreenRant, Maniscalco cited Super Nintendo World as a reason for his doubts.
In retrospect, my career journey can be likened to a thrilling rollercoaster ride, filled with ups and downs, twists and turns. To illustrate this, let me share an anecdote that encapsulates the highs and lows of my professional life: Recently, I visited Universal Studios, where they had a store dedicated entirely to Super Mario merchandise. As I was there with my kids, I excitedly pointed out the store and said, “Guys, come on! Let me show you my character in a stuffed animal.” However, to my dismay, I found that unlike all the other characters, I didn’t have an adorable plushie representation. Not even Spike or any other character was there instead. This glaring omission gave me a sinking feeling that I might not be invited back for the sequel, as I haven’t heard anything yet. So, much like the rollercoaster ride of life, my career has had its fair share of unexpected twists and turns, leaving me hanging on tight, hoping for the next big climb or drop. [Laughs]
It’s worth mentioning that Spike isn’t one of Nintendo’s main characters. Since his first appearance in the original Wrecking Crew, he has had very few appearances over the years. Additionally, due to a name change in Japan related to a movie and his similarity to another Mario family character with the same name, Spike is not a character who has received much merchandise. This isn’t shocking given that children usually don’t ask for toys of Mario and Luigi’s tough boss.
As a fan, I must admit that Maniscalco’s explanation about Spike was quite amusing, though it doesn’t seem to hint at his chances of reappearing in the Mario universe. Given Spike is a relatively minor character in the Mario lore, it’s plausible he won’t make a comeback as his storyline concluded satisfactorily in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Initially harsh towards Mario and Luigi, Spike eventually cheered them on by the movie’s end. The sequel isn’t scheduled for release until April 3rd, 2026, so it may be some time before we hear about Universal or Nintendo considering his return to the silver screen. Here’s hoping we’ll uncover more details about the film as we approach 2025!
