Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel Will Feature Characters That are "Really Deep Cuts"

As a gamer who’s been around since the Atari era, I must admit that the prospect of a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie has me feeling like a turtle waiting for his favorite mushroom to grow! With Keegan-Michael Key spilling some beans about the sequel, it seems we’re in for a real treat.

So far, information about the follow-up to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has been scarce, but Keegan-Michael Key, who plays Toad, recently shared some insights in an interview with Men’s Journal. Key hinted that the sequel will have a larger scale compared to the original movie, suggesting an influx of new characters. These characters are expected to be a blend of beloved classics and less frequently seen ones.

Key shared with Men’s Journal that it seems as if the creators have significantly expanded the world where these characters reside, introducing both familiar faces and some lesser-known characters. What’s interesting is that due to the current narrative structure, these new characters are shaping up to be quite intriguing.

In the upcoming movie “The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2”, it’s confirmed that Yoshi will be among the characters making an appearance. At the end of the first film, there was a hint about his arrival through a scene where a green egg hatched in the sewers beneath Brooklyn. This could be what Key was alluding to when he spoke about “old favorites”. As for the “deep cuts”, those remain a bit of a puzzle. With the Mario series approaching its 40th anniversary, there are numerous characters that have been introduced over the past four decades, making it hard to predict who else might show up.

In the same interview, Key refers to “interesting tales” or “compelling narratives.” The initial film left some open-ended storylines, such as Princess Peach’s background which was hinted at but not fully explored. In the movie, she is the lone human in the Mushroom Kingdom, mysteriously found there as an infant. Following the first movie’s premiere, ComicBook suggested that a sequel might delve into her past and possibly incorporate elements from Yoshi’s Island DS. If Peach’s story takes center stage in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, her father could be a lesser-known character as Key suggests. It’s noteworthy that King Toadstool has only been mentioned in Mario media and never featured in a game, making him an excellent candidate for the deep cut referred to!

Regrettably, we won’t have a clearer picture until we draw nearer to the April 3, 2026 release of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2”.
