As a dedicated fan, I was thrilled when Nintendo confirmed the Nintendo Switch 2 as the successor to our beloved console. Yet, many of us had another name in mind—the Super Nintendo Switch. The moniker fits well with Nintendo’s legacy, evoking memories of the iconic Super Mario Bros series and the Super NES. However, Nintendo opted for a different name this time around, and upon reflection, I understand why.
The original Super NES and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 both built upon their predecessors, but there’s one key difference: the Super NES did not play NES games, whereas the Nintendo Switch 2 will be compatible with existing Nintendo Switch games. It seems that Nintendo chose to maintain backward compatibility, ensuring a seamless transition for players like us who have amassed a library of beloved games on the original console.
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing what I’ve gathered from the developer Q&A: Instead of going with “Super Nintendo Switch” as the official name, Nintendo chose a more logical naming scheme. Given that the Wii U was the successor to the Wii, it wouldn’t have been unexpected for Nintendo to pick a different name. However, the naming strategy for the Wii U, which many perceived as just an additional accessory for the Wii, didn’t work out as planned due to confusion. To prevent this misunderstanding from happening again, it seems that Nintendo opted for a new nomenclature to clarify the product’s identity.
The intention was to leave no room for doubt that the Nintendo Switch 2 is a fresh gaming system, as evidenced by its straightforward title. This point is also supported by Takuhiro Dohta, the director of Nintendo Switch 2, who made the following statement.
“Dohta stated that the newly introduced System 2 boasts enhanced performance, however he encourages users not to solely focus on its technical aspects. Instead, consider it as the latest system produced by Nintendo. In our aspiration for it to become the new norm for the Nintendo Switch family, we’ve christened it the Nintendo Switch 2.”
As a thrilled gamer, I couldn’t hide my excitement when Nintendo unveiled the intricate details of the Nintendo Switch 2 during their April 2nd Direct. Peering into the future, I got a tantalizing glimpse at the console itself, and a host of specs for this handheld marvel. Although pre-orders haven’t gone live just yet, they’ve given us some insight on how to secure our spot in line for this hotly anticipated console that has gaming enthusiasts like me buzzing with anticipation!
In addition to unveiling the console, Nintendo also presented the highly anticipated game named “Mario Kart World”, which may be one of the most significant titles for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Given the success and widespread appeal of “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe”, it comes as no shock that Nintendo has chosen to make the next evolution of Mario Kart a launch title.
Among the other titles presented was “Donkey Kong Bananza,” marking the first 3D installment in the Donkey Kong series since “Donkey Kong 64.” Additionally, “Kirby Air Rider” was introduced, revealing the project that Masahiro Sakurai, renowned for the Super Smash Bros. series, has been focusing on post-Super Smash Bros. Ultimate development. Regrettably, this implies that the next Super Smash Bros. game might be released at a later date than some fans may anticipate.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement! The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, although not officially called Super Nintendo Switch, is set to drop on June 5th. To guarantee I grab one for myself, I’m planning to pre-order it. Given the massive demand, it’s wise to do so to secure a console when it hits the shelves.
