It appears there won’t be a fresh edition of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch anytime soon, as it was not featured in this week’s Nintendo Direct 2 presentation. This news is disheartening for fans of the game, suggesting that a new Super Smash Bros. may not be released any time soon. However, during the same week, another game announcement was made, effectively putting to rest any speculation about a new Super Smash Bros. If one is being developed at all, it seems to be in its earliest stages of creation, meaning we likely won’t see it for several years.
If you didn’t catch it earlier, Kirby Air Riders was unveiled as a new game for Nintendo Switch during the recent Nintendo Direct presentation. Interestingly, this game is being developed by Sora Ltd., who are known for creating the Super Smash Bros. series, and Masahiro Sakurai, the director and creator of these games. To clarify, while they’re not working on a new Super Smash Bros. title, they are busy developing a different game under their belt.
It’s great to hear that Kirby Air Rider is due for release this year. If there are no delays, we can anticipate that the creators and Sakurai might concentrate on a new Super Smash Bros. game in the coming year. As one would expect, the Super Smash Bros. Reddit community is reacting to this news. While some fans are upset about the lack of a game announcement during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct and the implications of Kirby Air Rider, there are also many who aren’t displeased. Some even suggest that the series could benefit from a break.
Initially, I felt a fleeting sense of excitement upon noticing Kirby in that particular art style, but alas, my anticipation was unfounded. Still, I believe it’s beneficial that Super Smash is taking some time off. In my opinion, the next game in the series should have enough space and advancements to distinguish itself as a strong follow-up.
A different supporter remarks: “Indeed, an excellent swap. And if Sakurai’s up for more, how about a fresh Kid Icarus game as well?
It’s uncertain how the future of the series will unfold, given that the next Super Smash Bros. game seems to be still a few years off. In order to maintain fan interest and happiness, it appears Nintendo may need to introduce fresh content or updates for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch in the meantime.
