The upcoming DC Studios film titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is gearing up for takeoff with filming now underway. This new venture follows the summer release of “Superman”, marking the commencement of the DC Universe under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Milly Alcock, best known for her role in HBO’s “House of the Dragon”, is stepping into the shoes of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, a character who hails from the same planet as Kal-El/Superman, played by David Corenswet. The star-studded cast also features Eve Ridley from “3 Body Problem” as Ruthye Marye Knoll, an alien girl raised on a different planet, Matthias Schoenaerts from “The Old Guard” as Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Jason Momoa reprising his role as Lobo, an intergalactic bounty hunter.
The second DC Universe movie is being filmed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K., which also houses the production of “House of the Dragon,” a spinoff from “Game of Thrones,” and will serve as the central base for DC Studios starting in 2027. (In contrast, the “Superman” series was filmed in the U.S., but most future DC projects, according to Gunn, will be shot in London.)
Movies and television shows filmed on the cutting-edge soundstages of a film studio include the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, Barbie, various DC adaptations such as Wonder Woman (2017), Justice League (2017), Pennyworth (2019), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), Sandman (2022), The Batman (2022), The Flash (2023), and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). This year, The Batman 2 and an HBO Harry Potter TV series are set to be filmed at this studio as well.
Gunn and Safran are working on the television series “Supergirl,” which is being helmed by director Craig Gillespie, known for “I, Tonya” and “Cruella.” Screenwriter Ana Nogueira, who’s also crafting the script for the DC Studios’ “Teen Titans” movie, penned the screenplay based on the eight-issue comic book series “Woman of Tomorrow,” written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely.
In the vein of “True Grit,” this comic book series follows the 21-year-old Supergirl, one of the last Kryptonians, as she accompanies a farm girl named Ruthye on a far-reaching quest across the galaxy. Their mission? To find the murderer of Ruthye’s father, Krem from the Yellow Hills, and seek vengeance for another of Krem’s victims – Superman’s cherished pet, Krypto, who was harmed while under a red sun. Over eight issues, they face numerous challenges including bounty hunters, fearsome alien creatures resembling dinosaurs, and space dragons, as their journey spans for several months.
Gods and Monsters in 2023, Gunn described this new version of Supergirl as a much more intense or brutal take on the character who drops F-bombs. He pointed out that unlike Superman, who was raised by loving parents from infancy, Supergirl grew up alone on a piece of Krypton and witnessed the death and killing of those around her for the first 14 years of her life.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to open in theaters on June 26, 2026.
