The filming for DC Studios’ “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is progressing smoothly, and a recent set leak could offer a hint about the movie’s direction. A video that surfaced online showcases the building of a detailed, expansive set representing an old-fashioned American town. Although set construction is common in big-budget productions, this specific disclosure piques curiosity because the original comic book series, written by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, primarily takes place in the expanses of outer space rather than Earthly matters. The appearance of a substantial Earth-based location suggests that the film adaptation, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and directed by Craig Gillespie, may focus more on Supergirl’s life on Earth, potentially modifying the storyline to suit James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.

In the 2021-2022 published comic book miniseries titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow“, we encounter a unique portrayal of Kara Zor-El unlike many previous versions. On her 21st birthday, Supergirl feels lost and aimless, leading her to a distant alien planet where she attempts to drink legally under a red sun. Her introspective moments are disrupted by Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young alien girl intent on avenging the murder of her father and the theft of her family’s sword by Krem of the Yellow Hills, a mercenary. Woman of Tomorrow adaptation signifies an important broadening or reinterpretation of Earth-related aspects in Kara’s narrative. As stated by James Gunn, this version of Supergirl will be distinct from previous portrayals. He explained that Kara experienced the deaths and violence of many around her during the first 14 years of her life, and came to Earth as a young girl thereafter. She is described as being more hard-edged compared to the traditional Supergirl we’re familiar with. A larger Earth setting could offer opportunities to delve into Kara’s tougher personality and the emotional trauma she endured watching Krypton’s destruction, potentially before her cosmic travels begin, or serving as a concluding scene prior to the credits.

Michael Alcock plays Supergirl, with Eve Ridley portraying Ruthye, and Matthias Schoenaerts is cast as the main villain Krem. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham will be seen as Kara’s Kryptonian parents, Zor-El and Alura, possibly through flashbacks depicting Krypton’s final moments or recordings. The most intriguing new character added to the storyline is Jason Momoa taking on the role of Lobo, the Czarnian bounty hunter. This inclusion promises a more chaotic, unpredictable cosmic adventure, potentially paving the way for bigger interstellar conflicts and demonstrating Momoa’s versatility beyond his previous DC characters.

James Gunn, one of the heads at DC Studios, is deeply excited about the Supergirl project and its talented crew. He recently mentioned, “We’re currently in the middle of production for Supergirl now, and it’s always a bit nerve-wracking to say it, but it’s been an amazing journey so far.” Gunn particularly admired the script, commenting, “The script was one of the first things we approved when we arrived. Ana [Nogueira] delivered a fantastic initial draft that just kept improving.” Gunn also commended the selection of director Craig Gillespie, stating, “Craig Gillespie was ideal for me. I, Tonya is one of my favorite films, and he’s lived up to every expectation as a director on a large-scale project like this when working with him as a studio head.” This optimism indicates that the creative team has a clear idea for bringing the cherished comic to life, even if it involves alterations such as possibly extending Kara’s time on Earth.
