Superhero Reunion: Stephen Amell and Matt Letscher Team Up in Suits LA!

NBC’s fresh legal drama, Suits LA, masterfully arranges an unanticipated superhero reunion. The upcoming show has revealed the debut of Matt Letscher playing the father of Stephen Amell‘s character, Ted Black – a surprising return for two notable figures from the Arrowverse. As reported by TVLine, the initial snapshots display a tense face-off between father and son, with one compelling image highlighting an intense moment where Ted points an accusing finger very close to his father’s chest.

This casting decision introduces an engaging dimension to the show, since both actors have played characters in the DC TV universe before. Specifically, Amell portrayed Green Arrow and Letscher brought the infamous Reverse-Flash to life across various shows, notably “The Flash” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Aaron Korsh, the series creator, shared with TVLine that the casting of Letscher came about in an unforeseen manner. At first, Letscher tried out for a different character, but his acting left such an impact on Korsh that he specifically asked the actor to audition for the role of Ted’s father.

Korsh stated, “Initially, I didn’t believe he would be suitable for the other role, but I asked him to audition for the part of Ted’s father because I found him an exceptional actor. To my surprise, he nailed the audition.

The character’s introduction signifies an exploration of complex family relationships, as Letscher portrays a dominant figure who wields power through fear and intimidation in the official descriptions. This fatherly conflict echoes a comparable dynamic from the original Suits, where Harvey Specter faced maternal conflicts.

As a passionate moviegoer, I’d rephrase it like this: “You see, Ted’s dad wasn’t exactly the most selfless person. He abandoned us when we were young, and I’ve always harbored a grudge against him for that. Interestingly enough, once Ted excelled in law school and began his successful career, only then did his father take notice. And let me tell you, I don’t appreciate that one bit.

He pointed out that the nature of an individual’s bond with their parents significantly shapes their perspective on life, making it more engaging to create characters who struggle with problematic relationships rather than harmonious ones.

It’s worth noting that although both actors were part of the Arrowverse, they didn’t interact on the show Arrow itself. Their only prior collaboration was in a 2017 episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, titled “Out of Time”. Regarding the Suits LA series, since Letscher and Amell are only nine years apart, there were some innovative strategies needed for Letscher’s casting. To depict Ted’s father in flashback scenes effectively, the production team had to age up Letscher using makeup.

The gathering enriches the experience of Suits LA, making it stand out even more from its precursor due to its Hollywood backdrop and self-referential aspects, such as famous individuals portraying fictionalized versions of themselves. This casting move not only acknowledges Amell’s superhero past but could also be a tactic to lure viewers as the series carves out its niche amidst the growing popularity of the original Suits on streaming platforms.

Suits LA premieres Sunday, February 23, at 9/8c on NBC.
