During a chat at the 2025 Puerto Rico Comic Con, the star of “Superman & Lois,” Tyler Hoechlin, shared his preferred Superman suit from his years as Superman. The choice may come as a surprise, yet it’s quite endearing. When asked about his favorite suit during a panel discussion, Hoechlin pointed out, “The one that sticks in my mind the most is the Fleischer suit we used in the pilot and flashback episodes.” He also mentioned, “I only wore it a few times, but perhaps because of that nostalgia factor, it’s the one I remember the most.
The suit Hoechlin mentions is based on the Superman serials from the 1940s produced by Fleischer Studios. These cartoons were among the first significant adaptations of Superman outside of the comic books, significantly influencing the public’s understanding and image of Superman during his initial years following his debut in Action Comics #1 in 1938. This distinctive appearance in the Fleischer cartoon’s version of the suit is a blend of Superman’s comic book suit and a unique style tailored for the animated shorts.
In the debut episode of “Superman & Lois,” Hoechlin initially dons a Superman costume inspired by Fleischer. This occurs during a sequence where Superman saves a child from a car falling off an overpass, mirroring the cover image of “Action Comics” #1. The grateful kid praises the suit, to which Superman modestly replies, “Thanks, my Mom made it for me!” before taking flight. Later in the 11th episode titled “A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events,” the Fleischer-style suit is revisited when Superman experiences a flashback to his early superhero days, including his initial encounter with Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) and his fight against Atom Man (Paul Lazenby) in Metropolis.
From the start of his portrayal as Superman on ‘Supergirl’, Tyler Hoechlin has donned several distinct Superman costumes. The outfit he wears in the Arrowverse contrasts significantly with the Kryptonian garb he wore on ‘Superman & Lois’. This difference is mainly due to the season two finale twist of ‘Superman & Lois’, which sets the show apart from the Arrowverse’s Earth, thus indicating that Hoechlin’s Clark Kent in the Arrowverse and on ‘Superman & Lois’ are separate manifestations of Superman existing in different realities within DC’s multiverse. Even after ‘Superman & Lois’ settled on a primary suit for Hoechlin’s Superman, it underwent numerous changes throughout its four-season span.
As a passionate admirer of all things Superman, I’m thrilled to share that in the making of “Superman & Lois,” we were the first to bring the iconic Fleischer suit to life on the small screen. Throughout its four seasons, the show paid homage to every aspect of Superman’s comic book, animated, movie, and TV history, often echoing visual cues and character traits from various Superman productions.
One of the most notable tributes was our adaptation of “The Death of Superman” in season three’s finale and continuing into season four. This wasn’t just about staying faithful to Superman’s rich history; it was about respecting his legacy and ensuring that every element, from its epic visual effects to its action-packed scenes, lived up to the grandeur expected of a Superman series.
Add to this the captivating performances by Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, and the rest of our talented cast, and it’s easy to see why “Superman & Lois” has earned a reputation as one of the best Superman TV shows ever made.
In the series Superman & Lois, the Fleischer-style suit made only brief appearances, but it was an impressive and faithful adaptation of the suit in live-action, and one of several references to Superman hidden within the program. With its distinctive appearance and role in the storyline of Superman & Lois, the costume inspired by Fleischer is unquestionably one of the most impactful live-action renditions of Superman’s suit ever displayed.
All four seasons of Superman & Lois are available to stream on Max.
