As a child of the ’90s, I vividly remember the impact that Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman had on my formative years. Teri Hatcher, with her wit and charm, etched an unforgettable Lois Lane into our collective consciousness. Her portrayal was not just a testament to the character’s strength and determination, but also a symbol of female empowerment in a time when such representations were scarce.

Way back when comic book stories were still sparking massive TV productions and interconnected universes, the series “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” was introduced on ABC in 1993 and quickly gained popularity. Capitalizing on the surge of comic book enthusiasm fueled by “The Death of Superman,” this show ran for four seasons and 88 episodes, ultimately propelling Teri Hatcher into household fame as she portrayed Lois. Later, she would star in hit shows like “Desperate Housewives” and movies such as “Coraline” and “Tomorrow Never Dies“. However, before achieving these milestones, Teri Hatcher made history by becoming one of the first internet sensations, with a racy photo from “Lois & Clark” reportedly being downloaded more times than any other image for a period.

An iconic promotional picture featuring Hatcher, bare-chested while draped in Superman’s cape, is among the most memorable images associated with the show, despite not appearing onscreen. In a recent conversation with The Guardian, Hatcher reminisced about the rapid spread of this image in its early days.

Hatcher playfully remarked, “I used to break the internet when dial-up was the norm,” but quickly followed up by saying, “I don’t take all the credit for being so remarkable. I recall a photoshoot associated with the TV show, which stretched over an entire day. For the shoot, I wore a white blouse and pencil skirt as Lois is a reporter from the Daily Planet, with the cape draped on top. It wasn’t until the final shot of the day that someone suggested, ‘Shall we try the cape without the blouse?’ I wondered at the implication – why would Lois Lane be wearing nothing under her cape? We did it as a jest, but the outcome was captivating. Even now, years later, I still feel a sense of pride about it.”

Despite any doubts or queries Hatcher may have harbored initially, the first photoshoot was met with such positive response that she subsequently participated in another, more sensual session. This second shoot showcased her in pictures on a Superman-themed bed, with its red covers enveloping her.

From 1993 to 1997, the series “Lois & Clark” was broadcast, boasting many well-known guest stars such as Sherman Hemsley from “The Jeffersons,” who played the Toyman, and Howie Mandel from “Bobby’s World,” who portrayed Mr. Mxyzptlk. This show enjoyed success beyond niche audiences and was particularly popular within, leading to spin-off novels and a collection of trade paperbacks focusing on Lois and Clark’s romance. A promotional image of Hatcher and co-star Dean Cain graced the cover of this compilation.
