Superman Becomes Immune to Kryptonite and Gains Massive New Powers

In a groundbreaking new era for both his fame and character development, Superman Unlimited #1 delivers a monumental comic that redefines not just Superman, but every Kryptonian on Earth. The story unfolds when the Justice League summons Superman to confront an enormous meteor composed of Intertron, a metal prevalent in the 31st century, yet impractical to refine due to its density in the present. Flying at it with full force, Superman aims to alter its trajectory, only to crash through it. To his surprise, the meteor’s thin Intertron shell conceals a hoard of green Kryptonite, posing a double threat as it weakens and poisons him. Yet, this is Superman we’re referring to, and he puts forth his best efforts to prevent the gigantic Kryptonite meteor from causing an extinction-level disaster.

In a dramatic turn of events, Superman successfully halts the incoming meteor and regains consciousness after being in a coma for three months. Meanwhile, the globe undergoes a radical transformation; Kryptonite is now as ubiquitous as steel, peddled globally by a small South American nation called El Caldero. Upon awakening, Superman learns about these changes from his younger counterparts, Superboy and Supergirl, who share their hardships in a world where even petty criminals can wield Kryptonite. To his surprise, however, Superman discovers that he has developed immunity to Kryptonite, as his body now appears to be composed of gold. This unexpected development could bestow upon him greater power than ever before.

Superman’s New Form Could Mean One of Two Things

There are two possible interpretations for this new golden version of Superman. The first hypothesis suggests a significant change in Superman’s abilities – his body might have turned into Gold Kryptonite. Unlike Green Kryptonite, Gold Kryptonite doesn’t kill Kryptonians but can rob them of their powers. In the Fortress of Solitude, Superman kept Gold Kryptonite, seldom using it even against powerful adversaries like General Zod. However, it has been employed on occasion; in “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?”, written by Alan Moore, Curt Swan, and George Perez, Superman used it following his supposed death, stripping him of his powers so he could live a peaceful life with Lois Lane and their son. This explanation could account for his newfound resistance to Kryptonite.

However, the transformation of Superman into Gold Kryptonite isn’t the only possibility; readers have previously encountered a golden Superman, notably in “DC One Million” and “All-Star Superman.

In the storyline titled “DC One Million,” the Justice League travel to the 853rd century to witness the arrival of the Prime Superman from his Solar Fortress of Solitude. However, they nearly meet their end due to a scheme conceived by Vandal Savage and Solaris, the Tyrant Sun. Despite this, the JLA manage to thwart the duo’s plans and observe the return of the Prime Superman.

Due to centuries of absorbing solar energy, the Prime Superman has developed powers that border on divinity. In an extraordinary feat, he creates a new body for Lois Lane using a DNA sample, effectively breathing life into her. The Prime Superman makes his reappearance in “All-Star Superman” issue 6, engaging in a heartfelt conversation with his younger self who is unaware of his destiny to become the Prime Superman.

Superman’s transformation into the Gold Superman represents one of the most potent beings to appear within any DC Comics. If Superman were to somehow metamorphose into the Gold Superman, he would possess powers beyond anything he’s ever experienced before.

This New Gold Superman Is a Massive Change

From the first issue of Superman Unlimited, it’s not entirely clear what new abilities Superman now possesses, aside from resistance to Kryptonite radiation. If he has metamorphosed into Gold Kryptonite – a more plausible explanation than him acquiring the golden powers of the Prime Superman – then logically, he might be capable of stripping other Kryptonians of their powers. It’s also possible that he has absorbed the powers of different types of Kryptonite, but this is merely conjecture at this point.

It’s plausible for Superman to acquire the powers of the Main Superman, but it appears much less probable. This transformation occurred for Superman after he was subjected to solar radiation from a yellow sun for countless millennia. It’s been established that Superman can develop immunity to Kryptonite when exposed to enough solar radiation; perhaps the Kryptonite sent to Earth is distinct and brought about this change. However, it’s also worth noting that Superman only appears golden under a spectrometer, whereas his Prime Superman form is always gold. Regardless, his character as we know it will be forever altered.
