As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for comic book lore, I can confidently say that the upcoming Superman reboot under James Gunn’s direction has me thoroughly excited! Having grown up reading classics like “All-Star Superman” and “Superman For All Seasons,” it’s heartening to see these influential stories serving as inspiration for the new film.
The lasting impact of Superman: spanning nearly nine decades in comic books. Since the steel-strong hero crashed into public consciousness in the first issue of Action Comics back in 1938 (with Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s forward-thinking creators predicting that their superhero would change the course of the world), DC comics have fueled generations of radio dramas, live-action and animated adaptations, TV series, and films, such as James Gunn’s Superman film.
In contrast to Zack Snyder’s interpretation of Superman in the DC Extended Universe, which was heavily influenced by John Byrne’s “The Man of Steel” and “The Death of Superman,” the revamped DC Universe takes inspiration from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s compassionate “All-Star Superman” and Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s growth-focused narrative “Superman For All Seasons.”
Previously known as “Superman: Legacy,” Gunn’s reboot is heavily influenced by the comic series “All-Star Superman,” as confirmed by the filmmaker and a key figure at DC Studios. To coincide with the movie’s release in theaters on July 11, 2025, DC will unveil “The Superman Box Set“: a collection of four graphic novels that compile some of the most impactful and influential Superman stories.
On June 24th, 2025, you can purchase a set for $85 that’s slated to hit the shelves. This collection encompasses the following softcover editions:
- All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly, ranked as the number one Superman story by IGN
- Superman for All Seasons by Batman: The Long Halloween team Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, a critically acclaimed standalone story stuctured thematically around the four seasons
- Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?, a tale of Superman’s last adventures by Watchmen writer Alan Moore and definitive Superman artist Curt Swan
- Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, a near-future clash between old-guard and new-guard super heroes that was called “One of the best comic stories ever told” by the Washington Examiner
The publishing company has launched a comparable boxed collection for the comics that served as inspiration for Matt Reeves’ 2022 film “The Batman”. This set includes “Batman: Year One”, “Batman: The Long Halloween”, and “Batman: Ego”. Additionally, DC offers a freshly reprinted edition of the complete 12-issue run of “Absolute All-Star Superman” and a brand new deluxe hardcover edition of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”. You can find apparel and the initial merchandise for the upcoming “Superman” movie available for both purchase and pre-order right here.
