Superman Day Is the Perfect Time to Watch Zack Snyder and Bruce Timm’s Animated Superman

Today, Washington D.C. has been honoring Superman Day by unveiling exciting updates about the upcoming Superman movie and DC comics. There’s plenty to admire! Although the spotlight is primarily on the new, it’s also a great moment to revisit the incredible collaboration between Zack Snyder and Bruce Timm for Superman’s 75th Anniversary. This unique partnership highlighted different portrayals of Superman in comics, television, and movies over the years. In under two minutes, Snyder and Timm present a compilation of iconic moments from Superman’s career, which you can watch in the video above.

The short animation commences by depicting a traditional Superman character, transitioning from his comic book persona to George Reeves’ version. Subsequently, there are confrontations with Brainiac and Bizarro, followed swiftly by Krypto’s arrival. In quick succession, we see appearances by the Super Friends, Muhammad Ali, Christopher Reeve, and Doomsday. Not long after, four new Supermen emerge, along with Superman’s Electric Blue phase.

Up next is “Superman: The Animated Series,” taking us through different periods in Superman’s life, like Kingdom Come, the New 52, and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. This short wraps up with a bang, marking an incredible 75 years of Superman. If you want to see it all unfold, check out the video above.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Timm discussed the origins of the project and how they managed to capture such a vast amount of Superman’s history within only 2 minutes. Initially, they aimed for just 1 minute, but found it unattainable. As Timm explained, “The concept was to trace the storyline from Siegel and Shuster right up to Henry Cavill, highlighting all the significant milestones and memorable moments in between.

According to Timm, Zack Snyder came up with the concept. They initially proposed a short film for the DC Nation show on Cartoon Network. Snyder suggested creating a brief summary of Superman’s entire history within a minute. When we agreed, we found ourselves questioning if it was even possible. As we began working, we soon realized that condensing such a vast story into just one minute was an impossible task.

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself in a tough spot when deciding which film and TV adaptations would fit within the limited timeframe. There was one individual, Kirk Alyn, who I dearly wished to include – he played the first live-action Superman in serials. Unfortunately, he just missed making the cut.

Moreover, there have been multiple iterations of Superboy shows, but we had to draw a line. We thought, “Okay, those are Superboy, not Superman, so they don’t quite make it.

It turned out to be quite complex deciding which comic book versions would be included, as it can be difficult for someone who’s not deeply versed in comics to tell apart a Curt Swan Superman from a Wayne Boring Superman. This required numerous attempts and adjustments with the animation, according to Timm.
