Superman: James Gunn Reveals DC Studios Plan to Address Overworked VFX Artists

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more superhero films than I can count on my fingers and toes, it’s refreshing to see a director like James Gunn taking a stand for his VFX artists. His commitment to giving them the time and respect they deserve is not only commendable but also crucial in delivering top-notch visual effects.

Recently, the intense workload faced by visual effects workers due to an increasing number of superhero movies has become a popular discussion topic among film communities online. Frequently, these VFX companies are pushed for time because of the standard practice of reshoots, leading to subpar outcomes. However, James Gunn assures that DC Studios’ visual effects collaborators will not have to worry about working under tight deadlines and crunching to meet their goals.

Over the weekend, Gunn stated on social media that his films have consistently taken an unconventional route. He emphasized giving his visual effects artists ample time to perform their duties effectively and showing them the respect they deserve. As a result, he noted, the visual effects in these movies are consistently excellent, thanks not only to this approach but also to the exceptional talents of his colleagues at Weta, Framestore, ILM, and other studios.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m often compared to director Gunn due to my meticulous approach to game design. Just like him, I painstakingly hand-draw each scene that unfolds within the virtual world of my games.

“Gunn explained that we wrapped production on Superman a year before its release due to extensive post-production work on various scenes, which had been underway for months prior. He also mentioned that editing starts during filming itself, and that’s why he prepares thoroughly and only shoots completed screenplays. The same approach is being applied to Supergirl, a project he’s not directing. Gunn can’t express enough appreciation for the VFX artists who help us conjure up magic.”

In this new take on Superman, David Corenswet portrays both Clark Kent/Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan stepping into the role of Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult is cast as Lex Luthor, while Skyler Gisondo takes on Jimmy Olsen. Wendell Pierce will play Perry White, and Sara Sampaio is Eve Teschmacher. Terence Rosemore plays Otis, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a becomes Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced assumes the role of Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion portrays Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi takes on Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan is Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett plays Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover is Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald stars as Ron Troupe.

The DC Universe launches formally with “Creature Commandos”, due for release on Max in December, and “Superman: Legacy”, slated for cinemas on July 11, 2025.
