Superman: James Gunn Shares Photo of Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with memories of flipping through dog-eared pages of Superman comics, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia at the sight of Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. This character has been a part of my life since I was a young lad, and his evolution from “office boy” to the beloved pal of Superman is a journey I have followed with great interest.

Introducing Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s friend! Eighty-six years after his initial appearance, filmmaker James Gunn – responsible for the recently concluded Superman reboot at DC Studios – celebrated this milestone by revealing the first official image of actor Skyler Gisondo (known for The Righteous Gemstones) as the freckle-faced Daily Planet photographer who hangs out with Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

“Happy Anniversary to Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s friend! He first made his official appearance on this day in 1941, though he had an earlier role as ‘office boy’ in Action Comics issue 6. As written by Gunn on X, here’s a snapshot of Skyler Gisondo giving a thumbs up from the set. Created by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and Bob Maxwell, we’re all eagerly waiting for Skyler Gisondo’s portrayal of Jimmy Olsen in Superman, scheduled to air on July 11, 2025.”

The character who made his debut in Action Comics #6 of 1938, wearing a bow tie and working as an office boy, was later known as Jimmy. However, it’s DC Comics that considers Superman #13, published in August 1941, as Jimmy Olsen’s first official appearance. By issue #15, this office boy with journalistic ambitions adopted the surname ‘Olsen’, which was also shared by the character Jimmy Olsen from the radio serial “The Adventures of Superman”.

The initial movie set in the revamped DC Universe follows Superman’s tale as he learns to balance his Kryptonian roots with his Smallville upbringing as Clark Kent from Kansas. He embodies truth, justice, and the quintessential American values, all while being influenced by human compassion amidst a world that often finds such qualities outdated, as suggested in the plot summary.

🎉 Here’s wishing a Happy Anniversary to Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s friend! Debuting today in 1941 (although he made an earlier appearance as “office boy” in Action Comics 6), Jimmy was brought to life by the creative minds of Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and Bob Maxwell. Keep an eye out for Skyler Gisondo’s portrayal of him in the upcoming #Superman series on July…

As a passionate gamer, let me share some exciting news about the upcoming Superman reboot! I’ll be stepping into the iconic role of Superman, which is being portrayed by David Corenswet (Twisters). The talented Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will join me as Lois Lane, a Daily Planet reporter. Wendell Pierce (The Wire) takes on the role of editor-in-chief Perry White, and Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) becomes Metropolis industrialist Lex Luthor.

I, a devoted fan, am thrilled to share that Nathan Kress, who portrayed Gwen Stacy’s younger brother in the 2012 and 2014 installments of The Amazing Spider-Man, has been cast as Superman’s sidekick in the latest production.

Jack Larson shared screen time with George Reeves as the Man of Steel on “Adventures of Superman,” Aaron Ashmore in “Smallville,” Mehcad Brooks on “Supergirl,” and David Kaufman on “Superman: The Animated Series.” Marc McClure portrayed Jimmy Olsen in all four Christopher Reeve-led “Superman” films from 1978 to 1987. In more recent adaptations, Sam Huntington played Jimmy in 2006’s “Superman Returns,” while Michael Cassidy took on the role in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

DC Studios’ Superman soars into theaters July 11th, 2025.
