As a long-time comic book fan and gamer, I’m beyond excited about the recent developments in James Gunn’s “Superman” project! The announcement that Nicholas Hoult has wrapped filming on his role as Lex Luthor left me feeling nostalgic and hopeful for what’s to come.

Nicholas Hoult, who portrays Superman in the ongoing project, has completed filming as confirmed by James Gunn’s recent Instagram update. In his post, Gunn expressed gratitude towards Hoult for a delightful wrap gift – a copy of Superman #167 comic book. The cover art features a classic DC style with Superman imprisoned by Brainiac and Lex Luthor in cahoots, stripping him of his powers. It’s reminiscent of many vintage Superman covers filled with imaginative intensity. With that, Hoult has bid farewell to the set.

Gunn didn’t mean to imply that “Superman” had finished filming entirely when he thanked Nicholas Hoult for his wrap gift. Instead, he clarified, “We’re not done shooting – only Nick has wrapped up.” Gunn was thrilled to secure Hoult for the role and had previously discussed Lex Luthor’s role in the bigger picture of the DC universe.

“At last, I can reveal that @nicholashoult portrays Lex Luthor in #SupermanLegacy, and I’m thrilled about it. We had dinner together recently to brainstorm ideas for a unique Lex version unlike any other, one you won’t soon forget. However, we learned this news several weeks ago, but I chose not to share until the deal was officially confirmed. Looking forward to bringing Lex (and Nicholas!) to life in an exciting new way.”

What Lies Ahead For DC Studios?

At the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con, DC Studios enthusiasts are still optimistic for an exciting surprise from James Gunn’s team. Although Superman may not reveal their advancements during this event, there’s renewed anticipation due to various projects on the horizon. The second season of Peacemaker is approaching, while The Penguin is set to debut on HBO. Furthermore, fans are eagerly waiting for potential summer announcements. Going back to 2023, when Gunn unveiled this slate, he emphasized that it was a long-term commitment and not just a quick race.

In an interview in January 2023, Gunn shared his perspective: “Many believe we’ll resemble Marvel in many ways, and indeed, I gained valuable knowledge at Marvel. However, we have significant differences. Our narrative is vast and intricate, reminiscent of Marvel, but from the outset, we’ve assembled a team of writers to meticulously plan every detail. Additionally, our universe will offer diversity akin to Star Wars with various settings, eras, and events, or like Game of Thrones, where morally complex characters inhabit the storyline.”
