Superman: Lex Luthor Special #1 Review: An Absolute Must-Read

Superman’s ongoing success can largely be traced back to how satisfying the series is for long-term fans. Whether it’s standalone stories, backup tales, or subtle details woven into larger narratives, each element seems integral to a bigger picture, and promises to yield significant payoffs in the future. The “Superman: Lex Luthor Special” serves as an excellent illustration of this approach. Not only does it advance the storyline involving Superman and Lex Luthor, but it also leaves an indelible impact on the entire Superman universe in a deep and meaningful way, all while evoking empathy for one of DC Comics’ most iconic antagonists. It’s truly outstanding and upholds the high standard set by the run from the outset.

Joshua Williamson skillfully leverages Lex Luthor’s amnesiac condition in recent issues, making readers question when he might regain his memories. However, Williamson effectively delays this event, keeping the current storyline engaging. This prolonged state has noticeably impacted Mercy, revealing a more fragile side of her, while Lena forms a bond with her father. Superman encounters a Lex Luthor striving to avoid repeating his past mistakes, which explains the wide scope of events depicted in the special issue.

Speaking as a cinephile, I must express my deep admiration for Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Adriano Lucas, and Dave Sharpe – artists whose work breathes life into the quieter scenes in Luthor. It’s not just about observing these moments; it feels like living them. Each heartache seems to bear the burden of the world, making every instance poignantly profound. Yet, amidst these heartrending memories, there lies one of the most surprising and heartwarmingly hopeful moments in the entire series, perhaps even this single issue – a testament to their storytelling prowess.

I’ve always known that Lex Luthor wouldn’t stay away forever; it was only a matter of time and circumstance as to when he would reappear. While it might have been simple to portray him as innocent until his betrayal of Superman, such a path wouldn’t have carried the same emotional weight. In ‘Superman: Lex Luthor Specia’l #1, all the pieces are laid bare, yet the messiness of it all adds depth and complexity. What truly makes this comic a must-read, whether you’re a Superman fan or not, is that it invites us to understand Lex on a deeper level – to see how his hopeful and creative childhood was twisted by a flawed parental influence.
