Superman & Lois Introduces a Surprising Comics Character (And It’s Not Tom Cavanagh’s Mystery Role)

As a long-time fan of Superman and DC comics, I am thrilled to witness the introduction of such iconic characters as Milton Fine, who seems to be setting the stage for Brainiac’s debut in this series. The way Milton has been subtly woven into the storyline is a testament to the showrunners’ keen understanding of the source material and their ability to create an engaging narrative that keeps us on our toes.

As the fourth season of Superman & Lois approaches its conclusion on The CW, there are still unexpected twists in store for viewers – including the debut of well-known DC comics characters. This week’s episode, titled “Sharp Dressed Man,” brought one such character to life with Tom Cavanagh from The Flash portraying Godfrey. However, another eagerly anticipated character made an appearance in this episode as well. Be advised: the following discussion contains spoilers for this week’s episode of Superman & Lois.

In Season 4 of Superman & Lois, Lex Luthor (Michael Cudlitz) has received assistance with some of his endeavors against Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) and Clark (Tyler Hoechlin). This aid, particularly in the technological realm, is provided by a man named Milton, also known as Milton Fine, who we are introduced to in “Sharp Dressed Man”. Portrayed by Nikolai Witschl from Riverdale, Milton has not only constructed the device to contain Superman’s heart and the red street lamps, but he also played a crucial role in hacking Steel and Starlight’s suits for Lex. In fact, his work is so intelligent and effective that at one point during the season, Amanda McCoy (Yvonne Chapman) refers to him as a “genius”.

Indeed, this character aligns perfectly with the title “brainy” or “intellectually advanced.” In the comics, Milton Fine is a depiction of Brainiac, a metahuman with genuine psychic abilities that inadvertently attracted the supposed disembodied mind of Coluan scientist Vril Dox. After taking control over Fine’s body, Dox began referring to himself as Brainiac.

Fans might find it unexpected that the final episodes of Superman & Lois incorporated Brainiac into the series; even the showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher expressed surprise about this character’s appearance, as they had previously stated earlier in the year that they were taken aback by their ability to include a specific character (without initially disclosing who it was).

They mentioned that there’s a notable character from the comics who we didn’t expect to incorporate so early in the series – and lo and behold, here it is! At first, you might only catch their name being mentioned, gradually hearing it more frequently. Eventually, this character makes an appearance.

This season, Milton has been primarily depicted in that manner. As for the future of Milton’s character on Superman & Lois, with only two episodes left after this week, it remains uncertain whether he will transform into Brainiac or continue his current role of devising high-tech strategies to counteract Lex’s schemes against the Kent family. At present, we can only wait and see.

Superman & Lois airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
