Superman Makes One Big Change to Clark and Lois’ Romance (& It’s About Time)

In simple terms, James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie is giving a fresh take on the romantic connection between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, characters previously portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet respectively. This new Superman film sets the stage for the new DC universe, so it’s eagerly anticipated to see how it distinguishes itself from previous adaptations. Although audiences are well-versed in Clark and Lois‘ relationship through various comics, TV shows, and films, James Gunn hints that this Superman will approach their relationship in a unique way.

In a chat with ABC News, “Superman” director James Gunn described the romantic dynamic between Clark Kent and Lois Lane: “He’s deeply smitten with her,” he said. “It’s actually Lois who requires persuasion in their relationship. The opposite is true – it’s not him who needs convincing; rather, you can see how much he depends on her presence in his life.

From the perspective of a movie critic, I’d rephrase it as follows: In the classic portrayal, Lois Lane is often the one who pursues Superman, with him typically needing to be won over to the idea of a relationship with her. This dynamic can be seen in shows like “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”. While older narratives depict their courtship leading to marriage, more modern stories focus on them as an already established couple and even parents, as evident in the recently concluded series “Superman & Lois”.

Gunn also commented that the movie presents a fresh, unique tale for Superman, rather than a retelling of his origin story, which most viewers are already familiar with. This allows the film to dive into action more quickly and delve deeper into character development, such as Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor.

In the upcoming movie Superman, other DC heroes like Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific will make an appearance. Director James Gunn recently shared a sneak peek of Gathegi in the Mr. Terrific superhero costume to celebrate the character’s anniversary this week. On social media, Gunn expressed his admiration for Mr. Terrific, stating, “Happy Anniversary to Mr. Terrific, who has long been one of my favorite characters.” The photos reveal Gathegi dressed in the distinctive “Fair Play” jacket and T-shaped face mask that are iconic to Mister Terrific. Gunn added, “It’s been a pleasure working with Edi Gathegi to introduce Mr. Terrific to the big screen for the first time.

Due to a recent court decision, it has been determined that Superman can now be distributed worldwide. The legal team representing Superman’s creator, Joseph Schuster, had previously filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Entertainment/DC Comics in an attempt to prevent the film from being released. The case centered around international copyright laws and ownership rights returning to the original creator of Superman. However, the lawsuit was dismissed last week, making it possible for audiences in countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia to enjoy the movie.

On Superman Day, there was a special peek at the upcoming film with a focus on the behind-the-scenes action. A short featurette about Superman offered fans an exclusive look at the cast and team working tirelessly on the movie production. The audience caught glimpses of the stunning set designs and costumes that will grace the screen when the new Superman film debuts. Now, all that’s left is to be patient for another potential Superman trailer and for July to arrive swiftly.

Superman flies into theaters on July 11th.
