Superman release date – Latest news for James Gunn’s DC movie

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for superheroes and their intricate narratives, I must admit that the casting choices and plot details for Superman have piqued my interest significantly. With a career spanning decades of watching the evolution of DC’s iconic characters on the silver screen, it’s safe to say that I have seen it all – from Christopher Reeve’s timeless portrayal of Superman to Henry Cavill’s modern take on the Man of Steel.

At present, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is experiencing a strong revival at the box office due to the massive triumphs of Deadpool and Wolverine. Meanwhile, its main competitor in the superhero genre is gearing up for what it anticipates will be a significant resurgence next year.

The recently renamed Superman film by James Gunn, initially called Superman: Legacy, has completed its filming process as confirmed by the director through a post on platform X (previously known as Twitter) on July 30, 2024.

“Accompanying a photo taken during our initial shoot week, here’s what he penned down: ‘Our goal was Superman, but the real adventure was the hard work, laughter, feelings, brainstorming sessions, and enchantment we collectively experienced on set. For those shared moments, I will always be thankful.'”

I’m thrilled to be part of the anticipation for the upcoming movie that marks the commencement of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU on the big screen. This exciting production features David Corenswet alongside a star-studded cast, including Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Wendell Pierce, and Nicholas Hoult. I can hardly wait to see them all in action!

Here it goes: With everything complete, we conclude! May fortune favor our talented cast and dedicated crew who have breathed life into this endeavor. Initially, I aimed to create a film exploring a virtuous man in an imperfect world. However, the genuine goodness, kindness, and affection I’ve experienced throughout this journey…

In the upcoming movie, the role of Lex Luthor will be portrayed by him, and earlier he had a discussion with Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville’s Lex Luthor) regarding his preparations for the film. (Or) For the film, he will take on the character of Lex Luthor, previously discussing preparation with Michael Rosenbaum, who played that role in Smallville.

On his podcast “Inside of You,” he shared with Rosenbaum that Gunn possesses a knack for maintaining an exciting and spontaneous atmosphere, often encouraging actions like “Say this line. Do this! Do that!” from the monitors. This unscripted approach is something he finds particularly appealing.

“In essence, my preparation involves making myself as ready as I can be. This way, once I arrive, I have the freedom to discard my plans and act spontaneously.”

Apart from mentioning it, he also shared that he had been preparing for the part. Moreover, he commented, “There’s a passage in All-Star Superman where he discusses his muscles being genuine and the result of hard work. I saw this as a spark to my motivation.”

Absolutely! My initial encounter with her was through “House of the Dragon,” yet it was her diverse auditions and screen tests for the role of #Supergirl that truly captivated me. She beautifully personifies Kara, as imagined by @tomking_tk, @bilquis, and Ana Nogueira.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that Will Reeve, the offspring of the legendary Superman actor Christopher Reeve, is set to make a brief appearance in the movie. He shared with Variety that participating in this cameo was an incredibly enjoyable experience for him.

He admitted that he felt more anxious about that particular situation compared to when he’s on TV for his regular job. The reason being, there were numerous people present, which added to his nerves. Plus, he had to remember just one line, making it even more challenging!

Superman is planning to track Clark Kent’s early years as he becomes a hero, all while juggling his job as a reporter with his duties as the final resident of Krypton.

Superman release date

Superman is set to make his grand entrance at cinemas on July 11, 2025. That’s just around the corner, so fans have less than a year left before they can witness the Man of Steel back in action on the big screen again.

In exactly one year #superman opens all over the world.

Following two television productions titled “Creature Commandos” and “Waller,” the upcoming film is scheduled. As per Safran, this movie is expected to serve as the “official kick-off of the DC Universe.”

The filming for this project started in February, and at that time, Gunn also revealed that the title had been officially updated.

“Thrilled to commence main filming on SUPERMAN today, February 29 (quite fortuitously falling on Superman’s birthday), he declared.”

Once I completed the initial version of the script, I named the movie “Superman: Legacy.” However, by the time I finalized the script, it became apparent that the title should be simply “Superman.” The film will reach audiences in July 2025. Happy Birthday, Clark! Soar, soar, and away!

Who will star in Superman?

In contrast, Henry Cavill, who initially took on the character of Superman in the 2013 film “Man of Steel”, will not reprise his role for Gunn’s upcoming movie.

Instead, David Corenswet (The Politician) will be appearing in the title role.

Following some back-and-forth discussions as DC revised its cinematic universe plans, Cavill announced on Instagram that he recently met with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and unfortunately, it was decided that he won’t be reprising his role as Superman.

“Originally slated to make my comeback in October as per the studio’s instruction, before they brought on James and Peter, this development isn’t simple, but such is life. The passing of leadership is inevitable. I acknowledge it. James and Peter have a world to create.”

Currently, on Twitter (previously X), Gunn stated that our tale will primarily delve into an early phase of Superman’s existence. Consequently, the role won’t be portrayed by Henry Cavill.

“However, we recently met with Henry and found him impressive. We’re quite fond of him, and we discussed numerous potential collaborations that could be exciting for us both in the time ahead.”

Gunn clarified to Deadline after the announcement of the new movie that Cavill wasn’t let go, as he hadn’t been part of the project from the start.

It was clarified: “Henry wasn’t dismissed from the role of Superman. Instead, he only appeared in a brief appearance. That marked the conclusion of his storyline. Many people jumped to conclusions that weren’t accurate. However, for me, it boils down to who I want as Superman and who the filmmakers want as Superman.”

In my perspective, for the narrative at hand, it’s not Henry who embodies the Superman role. Don’t get me wrong; I admire Henry greatly and believe he’s been treated unfairly by many individuals, even past administrations within this company. However, the character I envision as our Superman is distinct from Henry for several reasons.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Nicholas Hoult has been roped in for the role of Lex Luthor, while Milly Alcock is all set to shine as Supergirl. Though it’s not definitively confirmed whether Supergirl will make an appearance in Superman’s film, we can certainly expect her to grace our screens in a DC project prior to her standalone movie, Woman of Tomorrow.

In the latest updates, Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane, Isabela Merced is set to become Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi joins as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion is cast as a Green Lantern, and Wendell Pierce portrays Perry White.

Furthermore, Neva Howell has been cast as Martha Kent, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, while Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Christopher McDonald will portray reporters in the Daily Planet newsroom, joining an ever-growing list of confirmed actors for their roles.

What will Superman be about?

At present, we have limited information about the storyline of the upcoming Superman movie. However, it’s been confirmed that James Gunn will pen the script, and as per DC’s (formerly X) Twitter account, the film is expected to revolve around Superman navigating the complexities of his Kryptonian heritage while also dealing with his human upbringing.

In his latest update, Gunn hinted that the parents of the superhero are expected to play significant roles in the upcoming movie.

In a video shared online, Gunn expressed that the movie will mark the authentic start of the DC Universe, and right now, he’s enjoying himself immensely while crafting the script.

Simultaneously, Gunn and Safran shared further information about the film, with Safran commenting, “This is essentially the start of the DCU. The initial two projects serve as a tantalizing preview for what’s to come in Superman: Legacy.”

As a lifelong fan of superhero stories, I find myself deeply intrigued by this upcoming project featuring Superman. Having grown up watching the Man of Steel battle evil and uphold justice, I have always admired his unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and the American way. However, it’s not just his heroic deeds that make him a compelling character; it’s also the complexities of his dual heritage and the struggle he faces in balancing his Kryptonian powers with his human upbringing.

Simultaneously, Gunn stated: “We aim to move beyond the good vs evil narrative. There are truly noble individuals, such as Superman, who belong in this category. On the other hand, we have villains like Gorilla Grodd and the Joker, who are truly wicked. The rest of the characters fall somewhere in between, providing us with a rich tapestry to spin intricate tales, filled with various shades of gray.”

Is there a trailer for Superman?

I haven’t found a trailer for the movie just at this moment, but you can check out Director James Gunn’s announcement video showcasing the initial chapter of projects within the DC Universe, which is available for viewing right now.

Here are just a few of our plans. Up, up, and away! #DCStudios #DCU @DCComics
