In the first few hours following the release of tickets, James Gunn’s Superman has soared to great heights. Fandango’s official figures show that the Amazon Prime Early Access screenings are surpassing all other ticket sales launches in 2025—even those of Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four: First Steps.

As a die-hard movie fan, I’m thrilled by the unexpected twist of events unfolding in the superhero cinematic universe. It seems DC might snatch the top spot at the box office from Marvel, who has ruled supreme for years in the superhero genre, thanks to Disney’s dominance.
Amazon Prime Screenings Break Records
Based on Fandango’s report, the July 8th exclusive previews for Superman turned out to be the highest-grossing first-day ticket sales of the year, surpassing even the initial sales for Fantastic Four. The film’s Amazon screenings are part of a collaboration that grants Prime members early access to IMAX and 3D showings. This limited release generated significant interest, despite being rolled out on a small scale.

The available seats for these exclusive showings are rapidly disappearing from ticket booking sites, in stark contrast to similar screenings of “Fantastic Four”, which appear to be experiencing lower demand.
General Tickets Now on Sale
Today marks the nationwide release of tickets for Superman, along with the unveiling of its final trailer. The trailer offers a closer glimpse at Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor and features some intense action scenes, including what appears to be our first sneak peek at a character rumored to be Ultraman.
The excitement for the upcoming Superman film isn’t confined to box office figures alone. In a recent study titled “2025 Moviegoing Trends & Insight Study,” Fandango found that Superman is one of the most eagerly awaited summer movies, based on responses from over 5,000 moviegoers.
In a subsequent poll of 9,000 moviegoers who purchased tickets, it was revealed that Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor is among the most eagerly awaited performances this year – hinting at the broad allure of the film, not just limited to its lead character.
Superman Surpasses Fantastic Four in a Reversal of Fortune for DC
Initially, Fandango indicated that advance ticket sales for the Marvel reboot, “Fantastic Four: First Steps“, were performing exceptionally well and ranked among the top presales of 2025. However, it appears that Superman‘s ticket sales have surpassed those of the Fantastic Four, making it the highest-grossing first-day ticket seller of the year so far.
DC experiences a significant change in its fortunes, as it’s now gaining ground over Marvel Studios at the box office after a nearly two-decade dominance by Marvel. Movies such as Avengers: Endgame have been unrivaled blockbusters, barely touched by many other films in terms of records set.

Since the 2019 debut of “Endgame,” Marvel’s reign has shown signs of faltering. Movies such as “Eternals,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “The Marvels,” and more recently, “Thunderbolts” have fallen short of expectations. Marvel has made numerous efforts to regain its footing through multiverse narratives and established characters, but these attempts have produced varying degrees of success.
It seems that the instability previously perceived might have provided an opportunity for James Gunn’s DC reboot to gain widespread popularity. With new actors, a defined creative vision, and significant early enthusiasm from viewers, it appears that Superman is now poised to contest Disney Marvel’s dominance in the superhero genre—a feat that appeared almost impossible only a few years back.
Early Box Office Projections Suggest $100M+ Opening
Unofficial reports and preliminary guesses hint that the movie “Superman” might earn somewhere around $155 million to $175 million during its debut weekend in U.S. cinemas, although exact figures have yet to be announced.

Even so, if Superman manages to pull in more than $100 million during its premiere in 2025, it will rank among the highest-grossing opening weekends for that year and join the list of the most successful Superman movies at the box office when it comes to debuts.
