Actress Isabela Merced, best known for playing Superman, recalled an incident where she unintentionally leaked the movie’s “S” emblem on social media and faced consequences. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress reminisced about her time working on the upcoming DC Universe film and shared a humorous story about accidentally spoiling a secret. During a reading for Superman, Merced was thrilled to see a name card labeled “Hawkgirl, Isabela” and impulsively took a picture of it. She uploaded the photo to her Instagram story, which led to numerous phone calls as the image contained the Superman logo. Merced had mistakenly believed the logo was just a generic image, but she quickly removed the post after only an hour.
As I was totally engrossed in my movie, my eyes were suddenly drawn to something extraordinary – my name and the words ‘Hawkgirl, Isabela.’ My heart skipped a beat as I exclaimed, “Yes! This is mine!” I quickly shared it on my Instagram Story. Moments later, my phone started ringing non-stop with four calls coming in. Since I was watching a movie, I let them go to voicemail. In that moment, I felt it was my time.
When I finally checked my messages, they informed me that I had just revealed the ‘S’ of Superman! Going back to my Instagram Story, I couldn’t believe what I saw – it wasn’t a stock image! I had been doodling that ‘S’ since middle school.
The post was only up for an hour before I realized my mistake. Initially, I was worried, but as they say, all’s well that ends well. It was just an innocent mistake after all.
The upcoming movie titled “Superman,” helmed by James Gunn, is scheduled to hit cinemas on July 11th. Besides Merced’s Hawkgirl, the film brings a host of other DC universe heroes onto the screen for the first time, such as Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, and Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern. Notably, this is Merced’s debut in a DC film, but she had previously graced screens in the Marvel adaptation known as “Madame Web.” At present, it remains undisclosed which future projects within the DC Universe will involve Merced.
2024 saw the unveiling of the first official Superman trailer where viewers caught a sneak peek of Hawkgirl. In full regalia, she could be seen flying high, an exhilarating scene out of context. Previously, Merced had shared insights about Hawkgirl’s appearance in the film, hinting that Gunn designed a unique suit tailored to this particular storyline in the timeline.
Merced’s situation illustrates how much secrecy can surround big-budget movies like Superman. It might seem harmless to share the “S” symbol, but studios strive to manage information carefully with major franchises. This can be tough when unofficial set photos and videos leak, but generally, fans will discover details about upcoming films according to the studio’s schedule – like what the character’s emblem appears as. Some might think Warner Bros reacted excessively to Merced’s post, but their response can be somewhat justified. The “S” from Merced’s place card ended up being used in the movie, so it’s possible other designs were under consideration before a final decision was made. Fans are always eager for any information they can find about their most-awaited films, and even minor details like a Superman logo could influence perceptions of the project.
As a passionate cinephile myself, I’ve found myself immersed in some of the most dedicated fan communities, having contributed to blockbuster series like Dora the Explorer, The Last of Us, and Alien. I may be relatively new to the scene, but I’ve certainly grasped the enthusiasm fans have for upcoming movies, especially ones as iconic as Superman.
In the lead-up to its premiere, I’ve been careful about revealing too much, knowing well how eager viewers are for any tidbits of information. However, even the most cautious among us can make a misstep now and then. Thankfully, my recent slip wasn’t as major as those made by Tom Holland or Mark Ruffalo in the past, but it did teach me a valuable lesson that I believe will serve me well as I continue my journey within the DCU.
