Superman Star Prefers New DC Universe Role Over Past MCU Character (& He’s Right)

Actor Frank Grillo expresses his preference for playing Rick Flagg Sr. in the DC Universe instead of Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During an interview at FAN EXPO Dallas, Grillo shared his thoughts on working in both massive franchises. He mentioned that he had initially thought Crossbones could have a significant role in the MCU, but was let down when it didn’t pan out. However, he appears to be enjoying himself more in the DCU as he has already played Rick Flagg Sr. in several franchise projects, such as this summer’s “Superman”.

It’s unfortunate because Crossbones didn’t appear frequently on-screen back then, and fans adore this character. However, Marvel seems to have utilized nearly every other character except for Crossbones. Grillo expressed his excitement about reprising the role, but unfortunately, the character met an untimely demise. Despite that, I enjoy working with James Gunn. I provided a voiceover for Creature Commandos and will appear in Peacemaker, releasing in August. Before that, there’s Superman featuring Rick Flag. So, it’s a different experience, more of an adventure than the Marvel projects were.

In 2014, I stepped into the Marvel Cinematic Universe through “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” where I was introduced as Brock Rumlow, a HYDRA operative who had cleverly infiltrated SHIELD. After a fierce battle against Sam Wilson, my character endured severe injuries. However, I resurfaced in “Captain America: Civil War” as the ruthless terrorist Crossbones. Regrettably, my character met his end early on in that movie; his demise played a significant role in the enactment of the Sokovia Accords.

Earlier on, Grillo pointed out some distinctions between Marvel and DC. Although he acknowledges the merits of both, it’s the DC Universe (DCU) that appeals to him more due to its “more compact” nature. He shared that being part of the DCU at its inception, contributing to the growth of the budding franchise, is what excites him about it.

It makes perfect sense for Grillo to feel this way. By the end of summer, he’ll have made more appearances in DC than Marvel, and he’s also getting a chance to lead diverse projects. From an animated series like “Creature Commandos” to action comedy in “Peacemaker,” and a major blockbuster like “Superman,” these roles offer unique opportunities to delve into different aspects of Rick Flagg Sr. Acting in such varied projects has to be exhilarating for any actor; it can become repetitive if a character starts losing its charm, but DC seems to be coming up with innovative ways to involve Rick Flagg Sr. in their stories.

It’s regrettable that the full potential of Crossbones in the MCU wasn’t fully explored, as suggested by Grillo himself. With his extensive comic book history encountering various Marvel characters, it would have been intriguing to see him interact with Daredevil on “Daredevil: Born Again” or serve as a challenge for Peter Parker during “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” However, the MCU has always had a complex tapestry of interconnected storylines, and Crossbones’ limited role was a consequence of this complexity. Fortunately, leaving Marvel opened up opportunities for him to assume a more significant role in another shared universe, and we hope that Rick Flagg Sr. will continue to be a part of it for many years to come.
