As a dedicated fan of both the DC Universe and the captivating performances that actors like Pedro Pascal and Sean Gunn bring to their roles, I am thrilled to witness the transformation of Maxwell Lord in the upcoming “Superman” movie. While Pedro Pascal’s portrayal was mesmerizing in “Wonder Woman 1984,” I eagerly anticipate seeing how Sean Gunn will breathe new life into this complex character under James Gunn’s direction.
What makes this even more intriguing is the fact that we’ve already seen a version of Maxwell Lord on the big screen recently, but with different actors embodying the role, their performances are bound to be as distinct as night and day. I can hardly wait to see how Gunn’s interpretation differs from Pascal’s, and I’m particularly excited about the possibility of a more extensive arc for Lord in the DCU.
Intriguingly, Maxwell Lord is a character who often starts off working alongside our heroes before turning into an antagonist. Given his small, supporting role in “Superman,” there seems to be plenty of room for growth and development, which is music to my ears as a fan.
Now, I can’t help but wonder if, in the future, we might see Maxwell Lord and Pedro Pascal teaming up for a hilarious meta-performance where they play each other in a DC Universe sitcom. Now that would be something to look forward to!
This summer, the release of “Superman” will be the second time this decade that Maxwell Lord, a DC villain, appears in cinemas. Pedro Pascal portrayed him as the primary adversary in “Wonder Woman 1984,” which premiered in 2020, alongside Gal Gadot, the original Wonder Woman. In July, Sean Gunn will present a fresh interpretation of the character in his brother James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” film.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that beyond lending his voice to Weasel and G.I. Robot in “Creature Commandos,” Sean Gunn will also have the opportunity to show his face on-screen in the upcoming “Superman” film. The extent of his Maxwell Lord character in this movie isn’t entirely clear yet, but it certainly seems like he might be in for a more substantial role in the DC Universe in the future.
Despite the fact that Maxwell Lord was recently portrayed on screen, Gunn’s interpretation in the DCU will be noticeably distinct. In a recent interview with the Kristian Harloff Show, Sean Gunn discussed his role as Lord in “Superman.
Gunn clarified that it’s him portraying the character, not simply offering a fresh perspective. Since each actor embodies their role, it’s clear that our performances won’t be mistaken for one another. Therefore, we plan on presenting our interpretations in distinct ways.
In his own words, he pointed out a significant distinction between his portrayal of Lord and Pascal’s: the influence of James Gunn’s guidance steered him towards certain comic book sources published by DC.
Gunn stated that James guides me effectively towards important resources. Therefore, he believes the approach taken with the character’s portrayal will be distinct. After watching the film, it’s clear Pedro is a talented actor, but his performance in that movie doesn’t have much connection to my work.
Looking forward to discovering how Gunn’s interpretation of Maxwell Lord unfolds, given he seems set for an extensive storyline with this character. Historically, Maxwell Lord has begun by collaborating with DC’s superheroes, eventually transitioning into a villain. It appears that he may follow a similar path in the emerging DC Universe, making his debut in the live-action film in what looks like a minor, auxiliary role. The possibilities for character development are endless from hereon.
Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
