Superman Star Spills the Beans on Clark and Jimmy’s Bromance in Gunn’s Movie

Skyler Gisondo shared some intriguing perspectives about the friendship between Clark Kent (played by David Corenswet) and Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn‘s upcoming Superman. In an interview on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, Gisondo, portraying the role of the legendary Daily Planet photographer, spoke about the authentic bond between his character and Superman. He highlighted the casual and friendly dynamic that will be showcased in the film, implying a more human side to Clark Kent’s relationships. This aspect mirrors Gunn’s intention to delve deeper into the personality and values of Clark Kent as he lays the groundwork for the new DC Universe.

In David’s words, “Before we began filming, David and I had some time together and ended up becoming friends.” He added, “Our scenes together feel very natural, like we’re just pals. This dynamic provides a glimpse into the human side of Superman.” This relationship mirrors the traditional portrayal of Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen, where Jimmy serves as a close friend to Superman, offering a relatable human connection that contrasts with Superman’s superhero persona. By depicting Superman as a friend, the audience can empathize with his human side, emphasizing themes of hope and humanity that are important in James Gunn’s DCU debut.

During his podcast interview, Gisondo playfully remarked about David Corenswet’s impressive physique in their movie. He joked that they bonded over their shared passion for weightlifting, which is not something he encounters often. In essence, when two muscular guys meet, they can “bro down,” as Gisondo put it, referring to the camaraderie between them. This humorous comment mirrors the playful tone typically associated with Jimmy Olsen’s character, hinting that Gisondo is well-suited to embody the charming and energetic spirit of Superman’s sidekick.

Everything We Know About James Gunn’s Superman

In the theaters, James Gunn’s Superman, serving as the foundation for a completely fresh DC Universe, introduces Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Gunn, in his role as writer, director, and joint head of DC Studios with Peter Safran, is responsible for shaping the mood and path for this interconnected film series to come. The goal is to portray a Superman who embodies “truth, justice, and the American way,” as described by Safran, highlighting his innate kindness amidst a world that may find such qualities outdated. Gunn has confirmed that Superman is not a retelling of his origins. Instead, this film finds Clark Kent already known as Superman, working at the Daily Planet alongside Lois Lane. The story will delve into Clark balancing his Kryptonian roots with his human upbringing, managing his dual identity, deepening his bond with Lois, and finding his place among other rising heroes.

David Corenswet plays the lead role of Clark Kent/Superman, who dons a suit previously worn by Henry Cavill in the DCEU. In this adaptation, Corenswet’s Superman is approximately 25 years old, making him younger than Cavill’s version but more seasoned compared to Smallville’s depiction. Rachel Brosnahan from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” assumes the part of Lois Lane, a character portrayed as being exceptionally intelligent and initially hesitant about her coworker, Clark. Facing our heroes is Nicholas Hoult (known for his roles in “X-Men” and “The Menu”), who embodies Lex Luthor, Superman’s archenemy and the CEO of LuthorCorp.

Apart from the main characters of Metropolis, the movie ‘Superman’ features an array of other DC Universe heroes, hinting at the expansive scale of Gunn’s DCU right from the start. Nathan Fillion, known for shows like ‘The Rookie’ and ‘Firefly’, plays the gruff Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, sporting his iconic comic book bowl cut. Isabela Merced, who has been in ‘Madame Web’ and ‘Alien: Romulus’, takes on the role of Hawkgirl. Edi Gathegi from ‘For All Mankind’ and ‘X-Men: First Class’ portrays Michael Holt, a brilliant inventor better known as Mister Terrific. Lastly, Anthony Carrigan, seen in ‘Barry’ and ‘Gotham’, appears as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, an elemental transmuter. This diverse cast suggests a world teeming with extraordinary beings, making it necessary for Superman to define his role not only as Earth’s protector but also as part of a larger heroic collective.

Superman is scheduled for release on July 11th.
