Superman Trailer Includes Deep-Cut DC Character With Surprising Hellboy Ties

As a cinephile who’s spent countless hours poring over comic books and their silver-screen adaptations, I must say that the inclusion of Kelex in the upcoming Superman film has me more than just a little excited! This deep-cut character, with his roots tracing back to the creative minds of John Byrne and Hellboy’s own Mike Mignola, is a testament to the rich tapestry of characters that make up the DC Universe.

In the latest Superman trailer, there are numerous intriguing elements scattered about, and one particularly noteworthy scene occurs later in the video where Superman is depicted holding a damaged robot. This robot seems to be none other than the character Kelex, who is less commonly known among DC comics fans. What’s even more surprising is that Kelex’s creation and connection to Hellboy originated from Mike Mignola.

If you haven’t encountered Kelex before, it’s totally okay. Kelex is predominantly associated with Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, so unless a story focuses heavily on the Fortress, you probably won’t see much of Kelex in the series, except for possibly a couple of brief appearances.

I hail from the imaginative minds of John Byrne and Mike Mignola, the genius behind Hellboy and an array of captivating characters such as Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson, Sir Edward Grey Witchfinder, and more. My debut graced the pages of The Man of Steel #1 in 1986. Within the annals of Krypton, the esteemed House of El was aided by a multitude of Kryptonian Service Robots, and I was one among them, known as Kelex. I was personally assigned to Jor-El and remained unwaveringly loyal to the El family and him, alas my existence was tragically cut short with the destruction of Krypton.

Kelex is set to return to our world, brought back by an ancient Kryptonian artifact called The Eradicator. The Eradicator aimed to make Earth a replica of Krypton, which resulted in the construction of the Fortress of Solitude and the creation of a duplicate of Kelex. This is the original account of the Fortress’s origin, although it has been altered slightly throughout the years. However, Kelex has remained a constant character across these different versions.

Over the years, Kelex has aided Superman on multiple occasions, and it’s possible that fans will encounter Kelex in the upcoming movie, only to potentially witness his demise by the film’s conclusion. The scene with Kelex seems to suggest this possibility, but there’s also a chance that something related to the Fortress is happening, and he may still be alive. Here’s hoping the latter scenario turns out to be true.

Over time, viewers have occasionally spotted Kelex, including a stint within the Arrowverse. In 2016’s Supergirl episode For The Girl Who Has Everything, Kelex made an appearance, and when he reappeared in the Arrowverse, there were some updates to his design. His distinctive, almost lantern-like head remained, as did his shorter stature, but his torso and arms featured more contemporary details.

Kelex made a brief appearance in the Snyderverse DCU as well as other comic book universes featuring different variations, and he’s even been featured in video games. Fans can now look forward to a fresh take on this mechanical ally, which combines elements of these various designs into one streamlined and silvery version.

Regarding why Superman’s gripping him, we’ll find out soon enough, but it doesn’t appear to be a promising scenario. Over time, there have been numerous interpretations of this character, and given that we’re dealing with robots and artificial beings, there’s always a possibility they could resurface at some point. Here’s hoping the same applies here.

The Superman trailer gave us first looks at a host of other Superman-related characters too, including Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, and the adorable super-pup Krypto. While we’ve seen various versions of Superman, Lois, and Lex over the years on the big screen, this will be the first time we’ve seen characters like Guy, Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Krypto in film. After seeing Krypto rescue Superman in the trailer, he would presumably take him to the Fortress, and perhaps that is where we will see Kelex make his DC Studios debut too.

Superman soars into theaters on July 11th, 2025.
