As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for comic book adaptations and a soft spot for superheroes, I must say that the latest trailer for DC Studios’ Superman under the visionary direction of James Gunn has left me thoroughly intrigued! The inclusion of lesser-known characters like Angela Spica, aka the Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría, is an exciting twist that promises to add depth and complexity to this already star-studded cast.
DC Studios has unveiled the long-awaited trailer for James Gunn’s Superman, and it’s bursting with Easter eggs and references. One character you might have missed is Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, portrayed by María Gabriela de Faría. This character was confirmed by Gunn himself. In a fleeting scene, she can be seen crossing the archway of the colossal LuthorCorp building. It’s over in a flash, so it’s hard to tell what she’s doing at such a height, but it certainly sparks curiosity about her connection with Lex Luthor. Take a look at the image below for yourself.
In the DC Comics universe, Angela Spica is the second incarnation of the character known as the Engineer, a member of the superhero squad, The Authority. From an early age, Angela demonstrated exceptional abilities in computer science and technology, frequently dedicating her time to crafting sophisticated circuit boards.
After the initial Engineer’s demise, his research on nanotechnology was transferred to Spica’s personal computer at home for her ongoing tissue-machine fusion projects. Subsequently, Angela engineered a fluid form of machinery that she self-injected. The nanoscopic robots in her bloodstream granted her extraordinary powers such as metallic skin, flight, mind control over technology, and numerous other abilities. It wasn’t too long before she was approached by the Authority to join their ranks.
To commemorate getting the part, De Faría shared her joyful experience of securing the role of The Engineer on Instagram last year: “As soon as I got it, I bought a Superman costume from Party City…I surprised my agent with his own cape and champagne at his office…My godmothers were thrilled and we all acted like we could fly…I sent my parents a Superman action figure to Venezuela as a secret way to tell them about the role…They then sent me numerous gifts related to Superman…I roamed around town with the Party City cape, feeling like a kid after a birthday party.
The trailer for Superman is jam-packed with numerous details and swift character appearances, indicating that director Gunn has a strong desire to establish a solid foundation for future narratives. Not only does it include characters typical of a Superman film such as Lex Luthor, Pa Kent, and Lois Lane, but also unexpected figures like Green Lantern Guy Gardner (played by Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan).
It’s worth mentioning that we’re still uncertain about the roles these other heroes will play in the storyline, as well as how their individual tales will unfold within the DC Universe in future productions. There is a hint of apprehension regarding Gunn potentially overcrowding one film with characters, but his past successes with ensemble films such as The Suicide Squad and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy suggest that he’s adept at giving each character their moment to shine.
Superman flies across theater screens on July 11, 2025.
