Superman Trailer Theme Music Released Online: Listen Now

As a movie buff with a lifelong passion for superhero films, I can confidently say that the latest news about Warner Bros.’ upcoming Superman reboot has me positively giddy! The fusion of John Murphy’s electrifying guitar riff with the iconic John Williams theme is a brilliant move, striking a perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation.

Check out above: Warner Bros.’ WaterTower Music has unveiled composer John Murphy’s rendition of the Superman theme from the film’s initial trailer. This modern electric guitar melody is set upon the powerful and inspiring music from Richard Donner’s original Superman movie by John Williams. Titled “Theme from Superman (Trailer Version),” this snippet of Murphy’s score gradually escalates to a grandiose interpretation of Williams’ iconic, uplifting, and heroic theme song that has been synonymous with the Man of Steel ever since Christopher Reeve made us believe a man could fly in 1978.

Originally known as “Superman: Legacy”, the Superman movie reboot by writer-director James Gunn is acknowledging the character’s film history through a musical score that echoes the iconic theme music, which has been recurrent in productions such as “Superman Returns” (2006), “Justice League” (2017), and “Black Adam” (2022).

During a visit to the film set, Gunn mentioned that the music by John Murphy, who worked with him on movies like ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, pays homage to Williams and is exceptionally beautiful.

Gunn mentioned that Murphy’s score for Superman was more like a conventional symphony, not a collection of songs, contrasting with how the filmmaker has used pre-existing tracks in his previous superhero films. For instance, he employed Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love” in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It” in 2022’s Peacemaker.

Gunn stated that the movie isn’t primarily focused on its songs, although there are some included and he selected them in advance. However, it’s unlike his previous films in many ways. What sets it apart is the powerful score, making it more of a film driven by music rather than dialogue or plot.

The film “Superman,” powered by its score, incorporates references to Williams’ famous “Superman Fanfare” and “Superman March,” themes that have risen beyond the original movies where Christopher Reeve portrayed Superman.

Murphy’s tune syncs perfectly with the sensational launch of the Superman teaser trailer. As stated by Gunn, co-head of DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran, this trailer broke records as the most watched and discussed trailer in the annals of both DC and Warner Bros., racking up over 250 million views and a million social media posts within its first day online.

In the lead role of Superman, we have David Corenswet from Twisters, with Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Nicholas Hoult portraying Lex Luthor. This impressive cast also includes Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern, María Gabriela de Faría as The Authority’s Angela Spica/The Engineer, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.

DC Studios’ first feature film, Superman soars into theaters July 11, 2025.
