Superman Trailer: When to Expect the First Footage

Superman Trailer: When to Expect the First Footage

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a memory that stretches back to the golden age of comic book adaptations, I can’t help but feel a sense of exhilaration as I gaze upon the first glimpse of the upcoming Superman film. The anticipation among fans is palpable, reminiscent of the days leading up to the release of The Force Awakens or the return of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

As a follower, I can’t wait to see the first trailer for the upcoming Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn, which is set to hit theaters next summer. The anticipation among fans has been building rapidly: merchandise featuring the new Man of Steel’s symbol sold out quickly during San Diego Comic-Con weekend, and excitement has soared ever since DC Studios co-chiefs Gunn and Peter Safran announced that their Superman movie will be connected to both Creature Commandos and Peacemaker season 2, forming the core of the new DC cinematic universe.

Gunn revealed the commencement of main filming in February, offering a sneak peek at the forthcoming remake. The cast includes David Corenswet portraying Kal-El/Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan playing journalist Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult taking on the role of the malevolent Lex Luthor. In May, images of Corenswet in costume were unveiled online, and shooting concluded by July.

Apart from leaked images on sets and a brief glimpse of Krypto the Superdog, fans are still unsure about what style Gunn’s Superman movie will take on. Will it be similar to the witty yet gritty tone of The Suicide Squad, or perhaps a fast-paced, humorous yet crude action-comedy like Peacemaker? Or could it be an expansive and emotional space opera like the Guardians of the Galaxy films that Gunn has directed before? We’ll get our first glimpse at Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I remember the thrill when the first teaser for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” dropped on the Friday following Thanksgiving in 2014. A year later, Disney unveiled another tantalizing sneak peek on Thanksgiving Day itself. Trailers for “Jurassic World” and the remake of “The Lion King” made their debut during Thanksgiving football games, with the latter shattering records by garnering 224.6 million views worldwide in just 24 hours, making it the second most-watched trailer at that time, trailing only behind “Avengers: Infinity War”.

Instead of the holidays, movie studios occasionally unveil sneak peeks of their summer movies. Usually, these previews are shown before major blockbusters such as Gladiator II, Wicked, and Moana 2. These films serve to introduce new trailers for upcoming releases in 2025 like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, A Minecraft Movie, and Captain America: Brave New World. However, there was no Superman preview shown this time around.

CCXP Brazil 2024

Gunn has suggested, though not yet confirmed, that the initial footage for Superman might be unveiled at the 2024 CCXP Brazil event – a convention where Warner Bros. previously displayed The Suicide Squad in 2020 (even if it was done virtually due to the pandemic).

In the realm of cinema enthusiasts like myself, last year I was thrilled to find myself back in São Paulo for the grand spectacle that is CCXP. Warner Bros. graced us with a tantalizing sneak peek of their upcoming lineup, showcasing trailers and stars from the highly anticipated movies such as “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”, “Dune: Part Two”, and DC’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom”. Luminaries like Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, James Wan, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Denis Villeneuve graced our presence at this convention that usually attracts a staggering 100,000 film fans annually. Unfortunately, Gunn and Safran will not be present at this year’s event due to scheduling conflicts. Mark your calendars for the return of CCXP from December 5th to 8th!

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

The upcoming chance could be showing the Superman trailer before the theatrical movie adaptation of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which Warner Bros. plans to release on Dec 13, marking their last film for the year. Interestingly, the first full-length trailer for DC Films and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was shown before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first installment in Warners’ Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy, back in November 2012. This trailer debuted on Dec 14, 2012, which is 182 days prior to Man of Steel’s summer 2013 release date. Given that Superman will hit theaters 210 days after War of the Rohirrim, could history potentially repeat itself?

December Movies

If not the “War of the Rohirrim,” the last chance for a theatrical Superman trailer this year comes from December releases: Sony’s R-rated Spider-Man spinoff, “Kraven the Hunter” (Dec 13), has lower chances compared to Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Dec 20) and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (also Dec 20). Both “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” are projected to have opening weekends in the $50 million – $55 million range. If the year ends without a Superman trailer, it’s likely we’ll see one during the 2025 Super Bowl on Feb 9.

The movie titled “Superman,” created by Gunn and Safran for DC Studios, portrays Superman’s tale of reconciling his Kryptonian roots with his Smallville, Kansas upbringing as Clark Kent. He symbolizes truth, justice, and the American spirit, all while being influenced by human compassion in a world that often views kindness as outdated.

This production features Edi Gathegi from “For All Mankind” as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced known for “Alien: Romulus” as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion, famous for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” as the Green Lantern Gardner, Anthony Carrigan recognized from “Barry” as Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría, star of “Deadly Class,” as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Skyler Gisondo, well-known for “The Righteous Gemstones,” as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce, renowned from “The Wire,” as Perry White, and Frank Grillo, currently working on “Creature Commandos,” as Rick Flag Sr. Superman will fly into cinemas on July 11, 2025.
