Superman Villain Twist: Who’s the Real Enemy—And Is There a Secret Baddie Hiding?

The official trailer for Superman has generated a lot of curiosity worldwide, and with the fresh clips from James Gunn’s reboot in the DC Universe, there are several new queries emerging. Interestingly, one of the most intriguing questions that remains unanswered about this film is who the primary antagonist will be? It’s not that Gunn is following the strategy of other superhero movie directors by keeping his main villain under wraps in promotional materials – quite the opposite. In fact, Gunn has introduced so many possible adversaries for Superman (David Corenswet) that it’s challenging to pinpoint which one will be the main adversary.

Who is the Main Villain of Superman?

The complete trailer for Superman effectively paints a picture of the storyline that Gunn has crafted in his movie, giving us a clearer understanding of how different villainous elements are integrated. It’s not shocking to see that Superman’s rivalry with Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult) remains strong, and this conflict between an egotistical genius who feels threatened by a god-like yet very human superhero will likely serve as the film’s main focus. However, we’re left wondering about the roles of the numerous giant monsters, other superpowered beings, Superman’s allies, geopolitical forces, and military factions that are also shown in the trailer.

The new Superman clips introduce us to Angela Spica, also known as “The Engineer” (played by María Gabriela de Faría), a character from the DC team “The Authority.” She possesses nanotech abilities. Scenes from the trailer suggest she collaborates with Lex, along with Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) who was featured in the animated series Creature Commandos. Additionally, there’s a menacing figure in black armor and a masked helmet, who seems to have powers similar to Superman. Although Flag is unpredictable, it appears that The Engineer, this mysterious character, and their respective minions will confront Superman. Furthermore, other heroes seen working for Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) such as Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) are also involved. It’s clear that the traditional “Superman vs. Lex” rivalry from previous films will expand, as both characters develop their respective groups.

In the movie, the monstrous characters such as the colossal, vibrant Kaiju and the gigantic energy-based eye floating in the sky appear to be less central or main threats that Superman encounters – they might serve as subplots throughout the film, illustrating how the hero tackles a variety of issues, from rescuing cats stuck in trees to preventing wars and defeating giant monsters. Interestingly, it looks like the energy-eye monster could be a midpoint fight that leaves Superman severely wounded, prompting him to retreat to his Fortress of Solitude for healing, as hinted in the initial teaser. This could potentially lead Luthor and his forces to discover this hidden sanctuary. Essentially, instead of having a giant monster serve as the climax in typical superhero movies, it seems like the film will depict such battles as just another ordinary day for Superman – perhaps a subtle commentary from director Gunn himself.

Does Superman Have A Secret Villain?

Who is the man in the black suit? Many online theories suggest he could be a character similar to Bizarro or “Nuclear Man” from Superman IV. His ability to fight Superman evenly has sparked speculation, and it’s likely that at some point his suit will come off for a big reveal.

In the latter part of the Superman trailer, a plot twist emerges where a dimensional gateway device appears to be central, prompting Superman to engage in combat (and possibly save Lois) within an eerie realm that resembles fragments of another reality from the DC Multiverse. This realm seems to have been invaded. Though the figure Superman is flying towards remains unclear, it’s evident he is firing a beam from his eyes at someone. The viewers are left guessing about what this scene entails (is it the Phantom Zone of the DCU, or Zod, or even hints at Darkseid? Could it be Superman banishing that previously mentioned clone?). Regardless, the conflict in Superman seems to extend beyond our initial expectations, involving a broader and more expansive scope.

Superman hits theaters on July 11th.
