Since the 1930s, Superman has graced numerous tales spanning various genres, demonstrating the flexibility of superhero narratives to draw from diverse sources. With his ability to seamlessly fit into stories ranging from fantasy and detective to science fiction and horror, it’s no wonder that Superman is such an enduring character. While he can adapt to many story types, there’s one genre where he truly shines – science fiction. Undeniably versatile, Superman excels in the realm of sci-fi more than any other.
Science fiction elements have consistently been integral to the essence of most superhero characters we see today. Even iconic figures like Batman can find themselves in science-fiction narratives. Superman, essentially a product of sci-fi, thrives best within this genre. The superiority of science fiction is evident when it comes to telling tales about the Man of Steel. Many of the finest Superman stories ever written incorporate aspects of science fiction, which adds to his appeal. It’s high time DC Comics focused more on crafting stories with a sci-fi edge for Superman, as it could strengthen his status as DC’s top hero. This strategy offers numerous benefits and has potential to further establish Superman’s legendary position.
Superman and Sci-Fi Have Always Been Inextricably Linked
To begin with, it’s clear that Superman is a character from science fiction. Born on an advanced planet, Kal-El was an alien who was sent to Earth to survive. So, naturally, stories about Superman belong in the realm of science fiction. In his early days, Superman was portrayed as a champion for the people, battling against evil and corruption during the Great Depression. While there were hints of sci-fi in these early tales, they weren’t as prominent as they would become.
As science fiction grew in popularity in pop culture, it played a larger role in superhero narratives. For instance, many characters introduced during the Silver Age had sci-fi elements, such as Brainiac, an alien cyborg, and Lex Luthor, who used science to threaten Superman. Sci-fi elements also appeared in stories that sent Superman through time or space, dealing with various alien worlds and even the multiverse.
The Fortress of Solitude, Superman’s sci-fi dream base, is a perfect example of this integration. Compared to his Golden Age counterparts Batman and Wonder Woman, Superman adapted well to the science fiction genre, and this shift brought new life to Superman stories. Classic works like “All-Star Superman” show just how integral sci-fi has become to the character’s tales, with each issue featuring some form of sci-fi concept.
In the realm of science fiction, DC Comics has consistently stood out, with Superman leading the way. Earthbound tales about Superman are engaging, but they truly excel when infused with science fiction elements. Over the past few years, the most captivating Superman stories have been those that incorporate science fiction. The “Warworld Saga” transports Superman and the Authority into a cosmic war, while Superman: Space Age utilizes the sci-fi elements of the DC Multiverse to craft its narrative. Since its relaunch in 2023, Superman has been heavily influenced by science fiction, with Lex Luthor employing technology from SuperCorp to aid Superman against threats that often bear sci-fi undertones. Superman’s most formidable adversaries all possess a sci-fi element – characters such as Lex, Brainiac, Toyman, Doomsday, Metallo, General Zod, Cyborg Superman, and many more are all science fiction entities. Even some of the coolest supporting characters for Superman, like the Legion of Superheroes, are built around science fiction concepts. Superman is ideal for time travel stories and tales that explore multiple universes. Science fiction complements Superman perfectly. A Superman story without science fiction would be lackluster at best. Although exploring Superman’s morals and character can be enjoyable, without science fiction there are few credible threats to challenge Superman. Superman is an incredibly powerful character, and unless we resort to using magical characters or Kryptonite as enemies, there are no adversaries that can pose a threat without the addition of science fiction.
Superman Without Sci-Fi Doesn’t Work Nearly as Well
Some characters, like Batman, can have compelling stories without relying on science fiction elements. Batman tales remain effective even when devoid of any sci-fi at all. Contrastingly, Superman is a character that often requires the inclusion of science fiction to make his stories work. Over the years, I’ve found it hard to think of many Superman stories without sci-fi elements. The most memorable villains in Superman’s world are typically rooted in science fiction, with futuristic trappings. Even when Superman confronts ordinary crimes, there is usually a touch of science fiction involved. For instance, consider Intergang – they’re a criminal organization that employs advanced sci-fi weapons and concepts to pose a threat to Superman.
If DC aims to continue producing compelling Superman tales, they should focus on science fiction elements. Stories featuring Superman in space, the multiverse, or time travel tend to be financially successful. Since the “Warworld Saga” rejuvenated the Superman comics, Superman has primarily been Earth-bound, but the most captivating stories of this era have a sci-fi twist. Every so often, it’s enjoyable to read a more earthbound Superman story, but without science fiction, Superman risks being perceived as dull, a criticism he often faces.
