Superman’s Green Lantern Has Already Filmed Their Next DCU Appearance (& It’s Perfect)

Actor Nathan Fillion is set to breathe life into beloved character Guy Gardner, the tough-headed Green Lantern, not just once but multiple times. Firstly, we’ve caught glimpses of this fan-loved Lantern in action within James Gunn’s Superman film. But that’s not all – Fillion’s Gardner will also feature in Peacemaker season 2. Here’s an exciting twist: he’ll also star in the upcoming HBO series, Lanterns, which has a True Detective feel to it. Remarkably, Fillion has already completed filming for this highly-anticipated project.

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Fillion gave a hint about his upcoming role, and it seems tailor-made for fans who know the character from the comics. The part will involve Gardner working alongside two other Lanterns, Hal Jordan (portrayed by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre). From what we gather, this role could present a fresh aspect of Guy Gardner that differs from his persona in Superman, yet retains the same essence.

In “Lanterns,” Fillion observed that the character seems somewhat tense or nervous. He’s even played a scene where the character is calmly self-satisfied. It’s intriguing to watch the character adapt to various settings, and see how these environments influence his character.

In Gardner’s character, that smug demeanor has always been prominent, even in his most endearing instances, and it’s delightful to see Fillion preserving this aspect. Additionally, Fillion elaborated on the unique traits of Gardner compared to other Green Lanterns, explaining that possessing a power ring isn’t solely about being an unwavering hero.

An essential aspect of Guy Gardner…is that being a Green Lantern doesn’t require a virtuous heart. What it requires is bravery. And Guy Gardner believes he can challenge Superman. That shows just how fearless he is. I’m sorry, but you can’t take on Superman, man,” Fillion expressed.

The Bowl Cut Says Everything

Among the various aspects that remained unchanged is Gardner’s distinctive bowl haircut, which Fillion wholeheartedly embraced from the start. In discussions about a different quirky hairstyle, a bowl cut wasn’t necessarily the chosen one, but Fillion was firmly in favor of it. “There were suggestions for alternative styles, just as goofy, but not a bowl cut,” Fillion stated. “I was Team Bowl Cut throughout. We even did a preliminary screen test with other actors, and they provided me with a trial bowl cut wig. I thought it was fantastic. The bowl cut perfectly encapsulates the essence of Guy Gardner.

The question was whether people would purchase the bowl haircut or accept it. I responded by saying they already do; it’s an established style. It’s part of the character’s history. If we don’t go with the bowl cut, there will be criticism. However, the point being made is that this is Guy Gardner’s character. So, if you want to know anything about Guy Gardner, understand this: he sports a bowl cut and embraces it. What does that tell us about him?

Superman soars into theaters on July 11th.
