In the opening pages of “Superman Unlimited,” I witnessed an event that drastically altered the Steel Man’s universe. A meteor made entirely of lethal Kryptonite mysteriously crashed on Earth, and though Superman heroically prevented mass destruction, he fell into a deep coma for three months. Upon waking, I noticed a world forever transformed. Kryptonite had become more abundant than ever, making it one of the most valuable resources on the planet, catapulting the once modest nation-state of El Caldero into wealth beyond measure. Now, almost anyone can obtain Kryptonite, making the world a far more perilous place for the Superman Family. Of course, Superman possesses a hidden advantage in his new golden form, but while it shielded him from Kryptonite poisoning, it came at an immense cost.
Superman’s Golden Shield Has a Time Limit
In summary, Superman’s body has found a unique way to survive an enormous Kryptonite meteor by releasing all stored solar energy at once, healing him and making him immune to Kryptonite temporarily. However, this golden glow lasts only about three minutes, giving him limited time to combat enemies using Kryptonite against him. Despite having more time than usual when dealing with Kryptonite, the energy required for this golden form drains all of his solar power, leaving him powerless like a regular human shortly after. Moreover, he remains vulnerable to Kryptonite when he reverts back to normal, so any missed traces could prove fatal. Lastly, Clark Kent must be cautious around spectrometers as they will detect the lingering golden glow on his skin.

In a turn of grim events, life has become more perilous for all Kryptonians. Yet, this ominous news seems only to be the beginning of further troubles. After making his way back to Metropolis, Superman intervened to thwart a group of common criminals attempting to loot an armored vehicle laden with gold. With apparent ease, he subdued them all, until they unveiled weapons and ammunition imbued with Kryptonite. In a precarious situation, Superman transformed into his golden form and effortlessly defeated them once more.
In this scenario, Metropolis’s local talk-show host and eccentric character, known as The Creeper, hypothesized that Superman’s golden form might have drained his powers. Feeling certain of his theory, he hurled a powerful spitball at Superman, who reacted. Unfortunately for The Creeper, a social media reporter named Data Scream was broadcasting the event live, and now the entire world is aware that Superman loses his powers when turning golden. With the unintentional exposure of such a significant secret, The Creeper scurries away, convinced he’s bound for hell.
Kryptonite Is Here to Stay, But Superman Might Not Be
Nearly everyone is aware of how Superman’s new abilities function, yet there remains controversy over whether Kryptonite should be sold due to concerns about its danger. The president of El Caldero, Castilho, stands to benefit from the high price of Green K and downplays its potential risks in discussions. Despite publicly supporting Superman and modeling their currency after him as a gesture of gratitude for the meteorite he brought into El Caldero’s territory, President Castilho secretly dislikes Superman and his associates due to their impact on the global Green K price. Superman graces the hundred bills in El Caldero, and they even have coins featuring Krypto the Superdog. Unsurprisingly, however, President Castilho is less than pleased when Superman and his companions speak about the dangers of Green K and thereby lower its global market value.
In an attempt to mute all opposition towards his empire’s vulnerability, Castilho dispatches a box of Kryptonite bars to an individual he trusts will resolve this issue for him. Coincidentally, the Toyman – one of Superman’s longest-standing and most unstable adversaries – now has nearly limitless Green Kryptonite at his disposal, which he plans to exploit in ways no one else could against the Man of Steel. With his malicious ingenuity, the Toyman is preparing to use this resource in a destructive manner. Superman had better be prepared to utilize every available second, as he will require each and every one to defeat the Toyman and survive the encounter.
