In DC’s Absolute Universe, the overarching concept is that hope is the underdog, which leads to a unique portrayal of their heroes. Instead of maintaining their traditional traits, this version strips them down to their essentials and highlights their core values intensely. For instance, Batman loses his wealth and global training experiences, Wonder Woman grows up in a hellish environment instead of among her Amazon sisters, and Superman is not raised by the Kents on Earth. This approach emphasizes the heroes’ true essence, revealing what they truly represent at their core. Interestingly, for Superman, this transformation means he loses something that the other heroes still possess – his name.
In his primary world, Superman’s birth name is Clark Kent. As he grows older and discovers more about his Kryptonian roots, he starts using Kal-El as another name too. Each name symbolizes a unique aspect of him, which he carries with honor. The Supreme Superman can’t do this since he didn’t grow up with the Kents, thus lacks the Earth connection that Clark Kent signifies; however, I have an idea about how the Man of Steel may eventually adopt the Clark persona.
Clark Kent is Superman’s Tie to Humanity
Despite not growing up under the care of Ma and Pa Kent like his counterpart from the primary universe, Absolute Superman did live with them for some time. Similar to the original, Kal-El landed on the Kent farm, and the couple who had no children welcomed him into their home. He spent weeks unconscious as his body acclimated to the yellow sun’s rays, then additional weeks unable to comprehend those who provided him shelter. It wasn’t until shortly before the malevolent Lazarus Corporation drove him out of Smallville that he learned to communicate in their language.
In this universe, I may have spent less time with the kindhearted Kents, but their farm was a beacon of hope for me, a survivor lost in the cold, endless expanse of space. With nothing but despair, I found solace in their farm, reminding me of my peaceful upbringing on Krypton. The warmth and kindness they showed me made me realize that Earthlings are not unlike my fellow Kryptonians – they too, have been battered by a heartless system, yet they persevere with goodness. Their resilience mirrors the spirit of my home planet, giving me hope for a better future.
Struggling to maintain his optimism, a challenge rarely faced by Superman, Kal finds himself in this predicament. He’s witnessed countless atrocities on Krypton, mirrored throughout the cosmos by Earth’s inhabitants. Yet, he clings onto the hope that defines him as Superman, and has returned to Smallville, specifically to the Kent farm, to rekindle that hope within himself. The Kents once revived his hope when it was on the brink of extinction with Krypton, and this is why he will one day adopt the Kent name in their honor.
Kal Will Rename Himself After the Kents
Currently, Superman is simply known as Superman. While his real name is Kal-El, he keeps this secret, believing the person he was before – who perished with his parents and planet – no longer exists. He’s recognized by his actions, which define him as Superman. Superman stands up for all humanity, aiming to release them from the oppressive chains the elite have imposed. Yet, he remains an outsider, although I suspect this won’t last much longer.
Superman has never sought to distinguish himself; rather, it’s his powers that set him apart from others physically. However, emotionally, his heart has always been the most human among all. To completely join humanity and become more than just Earth’s protector, he needs to create a human identity for himself.
In the upcoming issues of “Absolute Superman,” we find him slowly forming hesitant relationships with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen. This comic series hints at Superman’s potential involvement with a radical group called the Omega Men, which may signal his transition into a more human identity. Previous events have shown that the Omega Men are ruthless in their pursuit of goals, even if it means sacrificing their own kind – a stark contrast to Superman’s unwavering commitment to saving the world ethically. This internal struggle between Superman’s desire for change and his adherence to moral principles is intriguing to watch unfold.
Each day, it appears as though Lazarus is claiming more lives, and Superman, already emotionally drained and struggling to suppress his overwhelming anger, finds himself dangerously close to losing control. His alliance with the Omega Men might push him right up to that brink. However, I believe he’ll manage to keep a tenuous grip, teetering on the edge in his confrontation with Ra’s al Ghul, but won’t give in completely. He’ll find the strength to withdraw, just as Superman often does, recognizing that anger alone is not enough; he must remain anchored by hope. Together with Lois and Jimmy, they will break away from the corrupt forces like Lazarus and the Omega Men, and unite to strive for a better world without succumbing to the darkness themselves.
In a new approach, Superman will feel a chill when he recalls coming close to losing self-control and realizes he must find a means to restrain himself. This will help him recall hopeful times, preventing him from succumbing to despair and anger. To achieve this, he’ll adopt a human name and persona so he can coexist with the people he protects and be reminded of the goodness in the world amidst all the wickedness. He chooses the name Clark Kent as a tribute to the Kents who initially showed him that Earth mirrors the beauty of his home planet, Krypton. It’s possible Martha could have suggested Clark as her son’s name during their short time together.
Clark Kent represents more than just a name; it symbolizes Superman’s connection to his secondary homeland and showcases his human side. Underneath his superhuman abilities, Superman is essentially a good-hearted individual, capable of kindness just like any other person.
