Superman’s Nicholas Hoult Reveals Heartbreaking Way He Learned He Lost Batman Role

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for superhero films, I can’t help but empathize with Nicholas Hoult’s near-miss at Batman stardom. Having followed his career since his days as Hogwarts’ Tony Stark, it’s clear that he possesses the charisma and acting chops to carry such an iconic role. Yet, life in Hollywood is often a rollercoaster of highs and lows, triumphs and near-misses, and Hoult’s tale is no exception.

Nicholas Hoult revealed on “Happy, Sad, Confused with Josh Horowitz” about the impact of missing out on “The Batman” when Robert Pattinson was cast instead. Hoult shared that he learned through a radio broadcast that Pattinson was the preferred choice to embody the legendary Gotham hero, a role for which Hoult had been scheduled to audition the following week. He described this news as a “devastating surprise.

A week prior to our Batman audition, I was cruising in my car with the radio tuned, and they were discussing how Rob had been chosen as the new Batman. Yet, I couldn’t help but interject, “Hold on! The role hasn’t been officially confirmed yet! I’m auditioning next week. Let me have a shot at it!

Despite missing out on portraying Batman, Houlton will appear next in James Gunn’s Superman, the initial film in the revamped DC Universe. Originally, he tried out for the role of Superman, but later, Gunn found him more suitable to embody one of Superman’s most formidable adversaries – Lex Luthor.

James Gunn is an amazing director, and I couldn’t wait to see what he was creating at DC,” Hoult expressed. “When we talked, they considered my past experiences with Batman and didn’t want me to revisit that process unnecessarily. It was thoughtful of them. They seemed to value me as an actor and wanted me to be part of their universe.

In 2022, Reeves’ “Batman” movie, featuring Robert Pattinson, was critically acclaimed as one of the top films in the DC Universe. It proved to be a box office hit, raking in over $771 million globally and ranking seventh among the highest-grossing movies of that year. The duo of Reeves and Pattinson will reunite for the sequel, which is scheduled for release in 2026 – a gap of approximately four and a half years between the original film and its follow-up.

Indeed, it’s undoubtedly a tough hit to the emotions. On one hand, you cognitively understand the situation: “I realize I’m competing with Rob.” And on the other, your enthusiasm takes over, considering Matt [Reeves] as a talented director and the captivating script of an intriguing film. It’s a great movie, and you aspire to be involved in it. The character is exceptional.
