Generally speaking, many recognize Supergirl by her name Kara Zor-El, who is Superman’s cousin and one of the few survivors from the demolition of Krypton. Initially intended to assist in raising baby Superman upon their arrival on Earth, Kara’s spaceship got separated from his and veered off course, causing her to drift aimlessly through space. Eventually, she landed on Earth, where she found her infant cousin had grown into an adult, who aided her in adapting to life on our planet. They share a bond as strong as family ties, but it’s important to note that Kara Zor-El isn’t the only Supergirl, and at one point, Superman was married to a version of this superheroine.
Instead of an unusual marriage with his cousin, it was Linda Danvers, a lesser-known variant of Supergirl, who was his partner. This Supergirl’s civilian life served as the basis for her character, reminiscent of the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths version of Supergirl. A significant alteration was that Linda was not Kryptonian, hence she had no familial ties with Superman.
Different Realities, Different Supergirls
How did this alternate version of Supergirl get married to Superman? The answer lies in issues #78-80 of Supergirl Volume 4. Kara Zor-El, a Supergirl from another reality, appeared in the same town as Linda, and they teamed up to fight crime together. Eventually, the Spectre (the Angel of Vengeance) revealed that Kara had mistakenly entered this world and needed to return to her home dimension to become their Supergirl there. Unfortunately, she would die in a future battle to protect the multiverse. If she didn’t make this sacrifice, all realities would cease to exist.
Upon hearing this news, Kara stood motionless. She had no desire to perish, so Linda coaxed her into departing to verify on an adversary they once clashed with. With unwavering resolve, Linda stepped into a transdimensional spaceship, intending to offer herself as the sacrifice in Kara’s stead. This vessel ultimately plummeted onto Earth, the very planet destined for Kara. It was there that she encountered Superman. She concocted a falsehood about her being his relative from Krypton and steeled herself to maintain this deception until her demise. Overjoyed, Superman even organized a grand celebration in honor of his supposed “cousin”‘s arrival.
For a couple of years, they teamed up to combat crime, with an infamous pink kryptonite incident along the way. During this period, Linda found herself in a Silver Age-like universe for three years, battling relatively harmless villains while everyone around her seemed content. It was during this time that she grew fond of her world and her partner, Superman, although their relationship was complicated due to his belief that they were cousins. This misunderstanding persisted until he realized she had been dishonest about their family connection, all part of a test to see if she posed a threat. Once the truth came out, they shared a kiss and later got married.
Superman and Supergirl Even Have a Family Together But the Relationship Was Doomed
In this rendition of Superman and Supergirl, they had a child named Ariella. Regardless of their deep affection for one another, their relationship faced an inevitable end from the start. As a cosmic event loomed that would destroy the multiverse, it wasn’t Linda (Supergirl) who was destined to die to prevent it. Kara had to conquer her fear and embrace her unjust fate, while Linda was compelled to return home, forever remembering the girl whose life she gave, as well as the family she formed on another world.
In this revised version, let’s say: Instead of Lois Lane becoming his wife, Superman chose Supergirl as his spouse in a union that was free from any strange family ties. This relationship was legal, yet it may seem peculiar when you give it some thought. After all, despite Superman being aware of Linda’s deception throughout their friendship, the majority of people perceived Superman and Supergirl as cousins due to their shared family name.
When you look at the panel showcasing the other superheroes celebrating the happy couple, one can assume they were genuinely pleased for the loving pair. However, considering that most of them likely believed in the cousin relationship between Superman and Supergirl prior to the announcement, it’s reasonable to wonder: How many of them discovered their mistake only later on?
Perhaps Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superboy were among those who knew the truth beforehand due to their close friendship with Clark. But for the rest of the superhero community, they may have spent years assuming that Superman and Supergirl were cousins, only to find out unexpectedly that they were an item instead.
Not only did Superman celebrate Supergirl’s arrival with a grand parade, but their supposed cousin relationship was no secret to the public. Some may have speculated that there was more going on beneath the surface, a hidden romance perhaps, to explain away their close bond. However, in the simplistic world of the Silver Age, the revelation of their cousinship might have been quickly overshadowed by the excitement of the announcement. Indeed, it’s confirmed that at one point, Superman and Supergirl did get married, which, given the circumstances, certainly seemed peculiar.
