Superman’s Ultimate Vulnerability: Kryptonite Shower Hits Earth!

Behold! In the sky, it seems to be a bird or plane. But wait, it’s not either! It appears to be… Kryptonite?! You may know Superman for his incredible speed, immense strength, and ability to leap over tall structures in one bound. However, even this invincible hero has a vulnerability: Kryptonite, radioactive fragments from his destroyed home planet. While Green Kryptonite didn’t make its comic book debut until Action Comics #161 in 1951, falling to Earth on a meteor, Superman has been affected by it since its initial appearance in the 1943 Adventures of Superman radio serial, “The Meteor from Krypton.

In over 80 years, a meteorite from Krypton will disrupt the current state of affairs for Superman once more in the comic book series Superman Unlimited. This ongoing series, penned by Dan Slott (The Amazing Spider-Man) and illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire), introduces a shower of Kryptonite asteroids that expose Superman’s greatest vulnerability on Earth, igniting a fierce competition for the newly precious resource.

In a flash,” or more casually, “in no time at all,” the opening segment of DC’s All In 2025 Free Comic Book Day special, currently available, features Superman being summoned to space upon receiving an alert from the Justice League Watchtower. Since the League’s strongest members are absent in deep space, this appears to be a mission for Superman: he must divert an asteroid on course for Earth and avoid a catastrophic extinction-level event.

The Red Tornado’s scans reveal that the asteroid’s exterior is composed of Inertron, an extraordinary metal from the future, which is virtually indestructible, extremely reflective, and resistant even to Superman’s x-ray vision.

In the role of an ardent film fanatic, I’m sharing my excitement about a scene from “Superman Unlimited”. As the colossal, seemingly indestructible metal titan barreled down towards our planet Earth, Superman bravely shattered the meteorite’s upper crust. To my astonishment, beneath that layer lay an immense block of solid green Kryptonite – a substance that would render our mighty Superman more vulnerable than ever before!

As a child, I often pondered who would emerge victorious between Batman and Green Arrow, as Slott shared with the DC.com blog. However, from the very first page, I had no doubts that Superman would resolve everything by page 22. I never harbored any concerns for even a second. After all, he has the strength to lift a ship over his head, alter the moon’s orbit, and do whatever he pleases. I was confident that he wouldn’t meet with defeat.

Although Superman, as Clark Kent, will retain his ability to perform incredible feats, he’ll have to put in the effort to do so. His vulnerabilities are now more apparent. The stakes are higher for Superman in this new world, and while he’ll continue to embody empathy, optimism, and hope, his chances of success may not be as certain as before.

In a traditional start reminiscent of Superman, issue #1 of “Superman Unlimited” unfolds: Clark Kent, a humble journalist for the “Daily Planet,” casually uncovers his chest to display the “S” emblem hidden beneath, before he soars skyward in a flash of red, blue, and yellow.

Initially, Superman halts a hazardous pursuit involving Intergang brandishing advanced weapons, pursuing police officers near the intersection of 78th and Donner (a tribute to the 1978 film directed by Richard Donner, Superman: The Movie)). In the twinkling of an eye, Superman rescues a youngster who had fallen into a zoo’s lion enclosure; averts a catastrophic plane crash; puts out a raging apartment building fire; lifts a sinking ship’s hull from the ocean; and ultimately, the Blue-Costumed Scout assists an up-and-coming musician playing guitar in a park before responding to the SOS call from the Justice League.

In a typical day, Superman faces various challenges. However, he may soon struggle (find himself on the defensive) due to villains – ranging from powerful supervillains to organized crime groups like Intergang and petty criminals in Metropolis – exploiting his greatest vulnerability.

As a die-hard DC fan, I can’t help but feel that familiar sense of reassurance whenever I spot that iconic shield and flash of red. You see, it’s Superman we’re talking about here – the Man of Steel, the Last Son of Krypton. No matter what obstacles he faces, be it a pile or a planet made of kryptonite, you can count on him to rise above them. He may seem vulnerable at times, but when duty calls, Superman never disappoints. He’ll always be there for you – the Man of Tomorrow, ready to save the day!

Superman Unlimited #1 goes on sale May 21 from DC Comics.
